The 1st handball world championship took place on February 5 and 6, 1938 in the German Reich under the leadership of the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF). The German team that won all games became world champions. The tournament was played in the everyone against everyone mode. All games took place in the Berlin Deutschlandhalle , the playing time was 2 × 15 minutes each.

The four participating nations were the German Empire , Austria , Denmark and Sweden .
