Hangenmeilingen is a district of the Elbtal municipality in the Limburg-Weilburg district in central Hesse .
Geographical location
The place is at the foot of the 398 meter high Heidenhäusens on the eastern edge of the Westerwald and in the northwest of the Limburg Basin . The federal highway 54 passes a few hundred meters west of the village. Today's development consists of the old town center and the new housing estate in the south-west, which is clearly separated from it.
The roughly trapezoidal district borders in the east on the Waldbrunn district of Ellar , in the south on the Hadamar district of Oberzeuzheim , in the west on the neighboring Elbe valley Heuchelheim and in the north on Dorchheim , the administrative seat of the municipality.
The entire district area is characterized by a hillside sloping to the northwest towards the valley of the Elbe stream , whereby the gradient in the old town center is pronounced, while the new development area lies on a comparatively flat section. To the east, the terrain rises to a ridge running in north-south direction, the southern end of which is the little heather house. At 398 meters, the Heidenhäuschen is also the highest point in the district, while the lowest is on the main road. The place is surrounded by agricultural land, while the southern and eastern parts of the district are covered by mixed forest.
history
The first documentary mention dates back to January 21, 1333. The place belonged to the parish Niederzeuzheim , which had existed since the end of the 12th century. In 1896 it changed to the parish vicarie Dorchheim.
On February 1, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the place merged with the communities of Dorchheim and Heuchelheim to form the newly formed community of Elbe Valley.
Noteworthy is a reform school set up by teacher Franz-Josef Vogt in the 1920s with a strong focus on craftsmanship. After the ban by the National Socialist government in 1934, the school was rebuilt after the Second World War and, in 1961, when municipal schools in Hesse were banned, it was converted into a rural school home that mainly looked after children from problem families. In 2006 the facility was closed.

Listed buildings
Hauptstrasse 14
This residential building with a half-hipped roof from the first half of the 19th century stands out due to its symmetrical facade design and its location at a T-junction in the historic town center. The structure was changed significantly in 1935. Today the framework is covered by plaster.
Hauptstrasse 20
The half-timbered structure of this residential building from 1761 is largely plastered and can only be seen on an eaves wall on the upper floor. There is a strictly rectangular and symmetrically structured half-timbering with decoration in the form of two Franconian bay windows, man forms and converged arched struts. There are also rich carvings in the form of masks, columns, garlands , bands and rocailles . A plaque above the baroque front door identifies the landlord as an ensign . In the carving of a panel under one of the bay windows, he is shown together with his wife and equipped with a halberd and flag.
Oberstrasse 22
The building consists of the original half-timbered house, which was later extended to the street with a narrow extension. In the older wing, the half-timbered structure is hidden under slate except for the gable. It shows a very even, symmetrical framework, which is the only ornament with carved corner posts.
Wayside shrines
Am Steinchen: This quarry stone building at the northern entrance to the village from the direction of Dorchheim has a pyramid roof made of sheet metal and is completely plastered. The building dates from the 19th century and has a wrought-iron frame on the door from the construction period.
Hauptstraße: This wayside shrine with a pyramid roof was built at the beginning of the 20th century at the southern exit of the town, facing Heuchelheim. The figure of Mary in the picture niche is likely to come from the construction time. The masonry is completely plastered and decorated with plastered frames.
