Hans Dieter Schaal
Hans Dieter Schaal (* 1943 in Ulm ) is a German architect , set designer , landscape designer , author and artist.
Life
Schaal studied art history, German literature and philosophy in Tübingen and Munich from 1963 to 1964. In 1965 he began studying architecture at the Technical University of Hanover and completed it in 1970 with a diploma at the Technical University of Stuttgart . Since then he has been working as a freelancer. In 1976 he received a scholarship from the Villa Massimo in Rome. He has been running his office and studio in Attenweiler since 1982. Schaal is primarily active in the areas of exhibition design, stage design and landscape architecture and combines the disciplines with one another.
He became known as a stage designer through his longstanding collaboration with Ruth Berghaus , the costume designer Marie-Luise Strandt and the dramaturge Sigrid Neef . His first work for the director in 1983 was the stage design for the opera Die Trojans in Frankfurt. By 1993, a total of ten opera productions had been created in collaboration with Ruth Berghaus. Since then he has worked with well-known directors on many international stages. In the last few years especially with Arila Siegert .
Schaal has also designed the rooms for numerous well-known exhibitions, museums and memorials. In 2012, he showed a large selection of his models and drawings in the Ulm Museum under the title Denkgebäude (with moon) . The spectrum ranged from realized architectural drafts and imaginative stage sets to surrealistic representations such as the “door field”, a labyrinth of walls and doors that lead nowhere.
In 2011 he received the Upper Swabian Art Prize .
