Hans Poser (geographer)

Hans Poser (born March 13, 1907 in Hanover ; † November 4, 1998 in Göttingen ) was a German geographer .

Life

Hans Poser studied geography , geology and history at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1930 under Wilhelm Meinardus with the dissertation " Morphological studies from the Meißner area ". He completed his habilitation in 1935 with "Valley studies in West Spitsbergen and East Greenland ".

From 1941 Poser was acting head of the Geographical Institute in Braunschweig , but because of the Second World War he was only able to exercise the post from 1945. From 1948 he was there adjunct professor until 1955 as a full professor at the professorship of Hanover Technical University was appointed. From 1960 he was a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , after he was admitted to the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft in 1949 and to the Leopoldina in 1953 . In 1962 Poser returned to Göttingen as holder of the chair of geography, where he stayed until 1971. He was the recipient of the Carl-Ritter-Medal (1963) and the Ferdinand-von-Richthofen-Medal (1972) of the Geography Society , in addition he received the Albrecht-Penck-Medal (1992). The TU Braunschweig awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1986.

In addition to his dissertation and his habilitation, Poser made many other contributions to the periglacial morphology of the Arctic and the Pleistocene periglacial formation of Central Europe . He was also a pioneer in the field of Quaternary paleoclimatology . He also wrote the basis of tourism geography with his work Geographical Studies on Tourism in the Giant Mountains from 1939. Poser also enriched the geography of Lower Saxony through his stimulating teaching activities.

Furthermore, Hans Poser did a great job restoring the Geographical Institutes of Hanover and Braunschweig and building the new geography in Göttingen after the war. He also succeeded in re-establishing international scientific contacts in the post-war period , particularly in Poland and France .
