from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harden Marsden McConnell (born July 18, 1927 in Richmond , Virginia - † October 8, 2014 ) was an American chemist .

life and work

McConnell studied at George Washington University ( bachelor's degree 1947) and was born in 1951 at Caltech with Norman Davidson with the thesis I. Investigation of possible interactions between thallium (I) and thallium (III) in solution and in the crystalline thallium sesqui-halides . II. Spectrophotometric investigations of the copper (II) chloro-complexes in aqueous solutions of unit ionic ... doctorate . As a postdoctoral fellow he worked with Robert Mulliken at the University of Chicago in 1952 . He then did research in the field of magnetic resonance spectroscopy at Shell Development Company . In 1956 he became a professor at Caltech and in 1958 a Sloan Research Fellow . From 1964 until his retirement he was a chemistry professor at Stanford University ( Robert Eckles Swain Professor ).

In the 1950s and 1960s he made important contributions to the study of the electronic structure of compounds from their NMR and other spectra. For example, he recognized the importance of the hyperfine structure interaction in aromatic free radicals for determining the electronic structure of unsaturated hydrocarbon compounds. The spin label technique in EPR spectroscopy, which has been widely used in biochemistry, comes from him .

In 1962 he received the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry , 1971 the Irving Langmuir Award , 1982 the Dickson Prize in Science and the Remsen Award , 1983/84 the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, 1987 the Linus Pauling Award , 1988 the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences , the National Medal of Science in 1989 , the Peter Debye Award in 1990 , the ACS Award in Colloid Chemistry in 1997 and the Welch Award in Chemistry in 2002 . In 1965 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences , 1968 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and 1982 the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 1991 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Chicago .
