Prince Heinrich of Hesse and by the Rhine

Heinrich Ludwig Wilhelm Adalbert Waldemar Alexander of Hesse and the Rhine (born November 28, 1838 in Bessungen , † September 16, 1900 in Munich ) was a prince of Hesse and the Rhine and a general of the cavalry .

Life

Heinrich was the younger son of Prince Karl of Hesse and the Rhine (1809–1877) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1815–1885), daughter of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia . His older brother was Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and the Rhine and his younger sister Anna was the Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

Heinrich studied in Göttingen and Giessen . From April 11, 1854, he served as a lieutenant in the Hessian bodyguard regiment, and on January 22, 1859, he joined the Prussian army as captain . In the campaign against Denmark , Heinrich took part in the battles at Missunde , Rackebüll and Wielhoi. Since June 8, 1866 lieutenant colonel , he fought in the German war in the skirmishes at Hühnerwasser , Münchengrätz , Jacobau and in the battle of Königgrätz and then took over as commander of the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment on September 17, 1866 . During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/71, he acquired the Iron Cross II and I Class as commander of the 14th Cavalry Brigade stationed in Düsseldorf . In 1873 Major General , he gave command of the brigade he led in 1876 to Major General Friedrich Wilhelm von Rauch. In 1879 he became commander of the Grand Ducal Hessian (25th) Division and shortly thereafter Lieutenant General . On August 21, 1884 Heinrich received the rank of Commanding General and two years later on September 18, 1886 he was promoted to General of the Cavalry. Henry was then at his own request on 7 July 1887 with back-board for disposition made. From 1892 he lived in Munich. Heinrich von Hessen-Darmstadt is buried in the old mausoleum in Rosenhöhe Park .

Due to the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, Prince Heinrich was a member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1881 to 1900 .

Heinrich married in his first morganatic marriage on February 28, 1878 in Darmstadt, called Caroline Willich, called von Pöllnitz (1848–1879), who was elevated to the rank of "Baroness of Nidda" on the occasion of the marriage. With her he had a son:

  • Karl (1879–1920), "Count von Nidda" 1883

His second, also morganatic, wife was on September 20, 1892 in Darmstadt Emilie Hržić de Topuska (1868–1961), who was raised in 1895 to the "Baroness of Dornberg". With her he had a son:

Note: What is striking about this family tree is the fact that his grandparents and great-grandparents had many inter-family marriages. That is why the Hessen-Darmstadt company is represented there disproportionately often.
