Helmuth von Weltzien

Helmuth Carl Christian von Weltzien (born October 12, 1798 in Kaarz , † July 22, 1879 in Merseburg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Helmuth was the son of Hans-Friedrich von Weltzien (1768-1811) and his wife Charlotte Wilhelmine Sophie, born von Rieben (1773-1809). His father was a captain a. D. and Mr. on Kaarz. The family lost their estate in 1806 through looting by the French.

Military career

Weltzien was a penniless orphan and joined the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment of the Prussian Army in Berlin on May 3, 1816 through the mediation of his step sister's husband . There he was promoted to second lieutenant at the end of September 1819 . In February 1829 he was transferred to the 32nd Infantry Regiment and on June 9, 1831 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant . Weltzien rose to captain and company commander in September 1840 and on February 12, 1846 was appointed as a major commander of the 2nd battalion in the 31st Landwehr Regiment in Mühlhausen / Thuringia . In this position he took part in the battles at Federbach and Hirschgrund in 1849 during the suppression of the Baden Revolution . After the handover, Weltzien was in command of the Rastatt fortress for three months . Grand Duke Leopold honored him with the award of the Commander's Cross, Second Class, of the Order of the Zähringer Lion, and the city of Rastatt granted Weltzien an honorary citizen on July 28, 1852. After his return to Mühlhausen he became lieutenant colonel in March 1853 and in October of the following year commandant of Glogau . In this position he was promoted to colonel on July 12, 1855 , and on July 8, 1858, he was commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade in Bromberg . Weltzien rose to major general on November 12, 1858, and on October 18, 1861 received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with swords on the ring. Under awarding of the character he was on 15 January 1863 with the law as a lieutenant general board for disposition made. Weltzien was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

After his departure, he acquired the Marienfelde estate near Preussisch Friedland and moved to Merseburg shortly before his death. His burial took place in the Berlin Invalidenfriedhof .

family

Weltzien married on November 28, 1835 in Güstrow Marie von Blücher (1801-1858), the daughter of Captain Helmut Hardwig von Blücher from the House of Suchow; After her death on April 9, 1858, she was transferred to Glogau for burial. The couple had several children:
