During the Balkan Wars he stayed as a correspondent for Vorwärts in Serbia , where he got to know the Serbian language and culture. In 1933 he emigrated to France and worked as an employee of the social democratic exile organ Neuer Vorwärts . He died as an exile in Saint-Cloud near Paris. He was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
