The Hochschule Geisenheim University (also: Hochschule Geisenheim , abbreviation: HGU) is a state university of the State of Hesse with its seat in Geisenheim in the Rheingau . It was founded on January 1, 2013 as a new type of university based on recommendations from the Science Council . Predecessor institutions were the Geisenheim department of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and the Geisenheim Research Institute , which were merged to form the new Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences. This has almost 1400 students (as of winter semester 2015/16) in eight Bachelor and nine Master’s courses.

Prehistory and foundation

In 1872, through the efforts of Heinrich Eduard von Lades, the Royal Institute for Fruit and Wine Growing in Geisenheim was founded. Up until 1971, teaching and research in these areas were united there. In 1971, research and training were institutionally separated and the training area with its courses of study was assigned to the newly founded Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences (today: RheinMain University ).

The Geisenheim research institute and the Geisenheim department of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences existed until December 31, 2012 at the Geisenheim teaching and study location. After the state of Rhineland-Palatinate terminated a state agreement that had existed since 1987 for the joint financing of the Geisenheim research institute in the state of Hesse, a solution for the Geisenheim location was discussed in the responsible ministries. In December 2011 it was announced that, in accordance with the recommendations of the Science Council, both institutions would merge into a “new type of university”. In summer 2012, the state government and parliament in Hesse created the legal requirements and changed the Hessian Higher Education Act accordingly. On January 1, 2013, the Geisenheim University was formally founded as the 13th university in the State of Hesse. On July 9, 2013, the electoral assembly of the university elected Hans Reiner Schultz in the third ballot for a six-year term of office.

"New type of university"

When asked about the future type of university for the newly planned Geisenheim University, the State of Hesse decided on a new solution. In November 2010 the Science Council published a report with “Recommendations for differentiating between universities” in Germany. The Science Council called for the softening of the strict categorization practiced up to then into the two types of universities, universities and technical colleges, and more innovative interim solutions, which are now referred to with the collective term "new type of university".

In 2011, the State of Hesse took up this suggestion of the Science Council for the newly founded Geisenheim University. A committee of the Science Council visited the Geisenheim site for two days in June 2012 and examined the infrastructure there as well as the areas of teaching and research. This was followed in December 2012 by a report on the results and an assessment of the Hessian university project by the Science Council. In principle, the Geisenheim teaching and study location was certified as a new type of university and, for example, the general ability to do a doctorate at the future Geisenheim University.

The future Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences was explicitly certified as having a mix of high-quality research by the Geisenheim Research Institute and an adequate range of courses by the Geisenheim Department of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. The Science Council sees this as a unique selling point in the area of specialty crops in viticulture and horticulture, as well as beverage technology and landscape architecture. As a university, the institution therefore offers bachelor's and master's degrees in these areas. In addition, both application-related and basic research is carried out at the new type of university.

The ability to do a doctorate is linked to cooperation with a university for the first five years and is then evaluated. In the event of a positive evaluation result, the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences will be granted its own right to award doctorates.

On May 14, 2013 Geisenheim University was accepted as the 268th member university in the University Rectors' Conference. It is listed there as the “other university”.

Course offer

Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences currently offers nine bachelor's and nine master's courses, and further courses are being planned.

In the area of viticulture , the bachelor courses "Viticulture and Oenology" and "International Wine Economy" are offered with a Bachelor of Science degree . Building on this, the master's courses “Oenology”, “Wine Management”, “Viticulture, Enology and Wine Management” and the internationally oriented “Vinifera EuroMaster” are offered, all with the academic degree as Master of Science . Parallel to the bachelor's degree in “International Wine Business”, a similar degree under the name “International Wine Business” is offered in English. In beverage technology, there is a bachelor's and master's degree in "Beverage Technology" (Bachelor of Science and Master of Science) of the same name. New from the 2015/2016 winter semester is the six-semester bachelor's degree in " Food Safety " with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Geisenheim University also offers a seven-semester bachelor's degree in " Horticulture " (Bachelor of Science) and a three-semester master's degree in " Horticultural Science" (Master of Science). New from the 2015/2016 winter semester is the seven-semester bachelor's degree in “Logistics and Management Fresh Products” (Bachelor of Science), which is thematically related to the horticultural degree.

In the field of landscape architecture, the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences offers a seven-semester Bachelor course in " Landscape Architecture " leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree. This is the only Geisenheim degree course that currently still has an entry restriction due to the great demand . In addition, there is also a four-semester master's degree in "Landscape Architecture" (Master of Science) in this field of study, which focuses on activities in the municipal occupational field. In cooperation with the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences , the master's degree "UMSB - Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Urban Areas" ( Master of Engineering ) is also offered.

In the area of master’s courses, there is a Europe-wide cooperation in the joint master’s course Vinifera EuroMaster. The Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences cooperates with the École Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie in Montpellier , the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in Lisbon , the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in Madrid and, in Italy, with the Università degli Studi di Torino in Turin and the Università degli Studi di Udine in Udine . There are also other cooperative courses of study with viticulture and beverage technology courses with the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna . In the area of specializing as a vocational school teacher for the gardener apprenticeship, there is a collaboration with the Technical University of Darmstadt as part of a consecutive master’s course (postgraduate course Master of Education) there. There are other joint bachelor's and master's degree programs with the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences , the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences .

Research campus

The research facilities and projects of the Geisenheim Research Institute will be continued by the Geisenheim University and will be increasingly linked to the study areas and programs. The Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences is organizationally divided into two areas: the study center and a total of six research centers with 19 institutes and working groups. The management and coordination of both focal points are subordinate to a respective Vice President for Research and Teaching.

An example of the basic research carried out at the Geisenheim University is the only FACE project for special crops that has been in operation since 2009. Together with the network partners Justus Liebig University Gießen, Philipps University Marburg and the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology, the project will be further funded and expanded from 2013 with a total of 4.5 million euros as part of the Hessian research funding program LOEWE.
