The Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences in Saxony with two locations in Zittau and Görlitz, 35 kilometers away by road . The international name is Hochschule Zittau / Görlitz - University of Applied Sciences . Around 3,000 students are currently enrolled, including around 500 foreigners from a total of 32 nations.

history

The Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences was founded on July 13, 1992 as the "University for Technology, Economics and Social Affairs Zittau / Görlitz (FH)", with two locations in Zittau and Görlitz in Upper Lusatia.

On the initiative of Christian Weise from Zittau , the foundation stone was laid in the 17th century with the establishment of the “Zittau School”. The spirit of Zittau educational art spread through the “Zittau School” in the 18th century. Due to the strong economic position of Saxony, a royal Saxon trade school was established in 1836 . From this a building trade school developed , a civil engineering and building construction school and a higher commercial school with the right to award engineering patents. In 1951, an engineering school for the energy industry was set up, which received national recognition. The newly founded engineering college Zittau (IHZ) took over these graduates in 1969 and built up the faculties of power plants, energy conversion, electrical energy supply and business administration. The Zittau teaching and research reactor was also operated between 1979 and 2005 .

In 1988, the Zittau University of Engineering received the status of a technical university, in particular through postgraduate training (up to doctorate) and the practice-oriented university entrance qualification model . Graduates with special expertise were given the opportunity to obtain a doctorate and habilitation . With the establishment of today's Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in 1992, the range of courses in teaching and research was greatly expanded. There are numerous specialist laboratories and research institutions. In addition, some neighboring facilities of the former officers' college of the land forces "Ernst Thälmann" at the Zittau location were taken over when the company was re-established . In Görlitz, the engineering school for electronics and data processing on Brückenstraße was closed and the existing facilities were incorporated into the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.

International cooperation

The International University Institute Zittau was founded and built up in 1993 by a Saxon-Polish-Czech university consortium from the Technical University of Liberec , the Silesian Technical University , the Wroclaw University of Economics , the Technical University of Bergakademie Freiberg and the University of Zittau / Görlitz. The IHI Zittau has belonged to the Technical University of Dresden as a central scientific institution since 2013, but continues to conduct its university courses in cooperation with the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.

The university is a member of the Academic Coordination Center founded in 1991 in the Euroregion Neisse. In addition, together with the Technical University of Liberec and the Technical University of Wroclaw, she is the initiator of Neisse University . The conception of Neisse University is based on studying in a real linguistic, cultural, scientific and economic environment. Students and teachers from three countries are involved in it.

Faculties and courses of study

The university is divided into the six faculties of electrical engineering and computer science , management and cultural sciences , mechanical engineering , natural and environmental sciences , social sciences as well as economics and industrial engineering , which offer a total of over 44 diploma , bachelor's and master's degrees. In addition, the cooperative course with integrated training that emerged from the cooperative engineering training (KIA) offers the possibility of combining a course of study with vocational training.

Special features are the communication psychology course , which is unique in Germany , the culture and management course (first undergraduate course in cultural management at an economics faculty in Germany, founded in 1997 under the patronage of UNESCO ), the housing and real estate management course, which is both technically and economically oriented , the cooperative Master's degree in International Management (Joint Degree ) carried out with the IHI Zittau ( TU Dresden ) as well as the trinational network of Neisse University, which is co-supervised by the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences . The master’s degree in mechatronics is also unique. A double degree with the TU Liberec is possible here.
