Hubertus Carl Frey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hubertus Carl Frey (born May 29, 1929 in Breslau ; † October 23, 2003 in Stuttgart ) was a German graphic designer and art director .

Name and appearance

From the phonetic form of the first letter of its name H and C He created his legally registered artist name hace . With this - consistently written in lower case - he made himself known and only wanted to be addressed without the addition of "Herr".

Despite his small height , hace was a very charismatic person . In order to increase his recognition value , he created his personal corporate design , which consisted of his beard and his oversized horn-rimmed glasses . Both remained unchanged throughout his life; he had the glasses repaired again and again after damage. His "human calling card" also included driving a Porsche , although shortly before his death he switched to a Mercedes SL on the grounds that it was more comfortable. From a typographical point of view, the period at the end of every heading, caption or address was his trademark. This can also be found in some of the logos he designed .

Live and act

Hace was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1945 at the age of 15 , from which he escaped two years later with health problems. After training as a set designer at the Hohenzollerisches Landestheater , working as a cabaret artist in Werner Finck's "Mausefalle" and studying graphic design at the Free Art School in Stuttgart, he worked as a freelance designer and art director from 1953 . Along with Kurt Weidemann and Anton Stankowski, Hace is one of the most famous graphic designers in Stuttgart. He was the founder and for two years editor-in-chief of Format, a magazine for verbal and visual communication , for two years graphic editor of Idoc Rome, and also guest lecturer at the Freie Kunstschule Stuttgart. He also gave lectures at the Art Center in Prague and the Design Center in Stuttgart .

Hace was active against right-wing extremism .

estate

In his will was available in 2005 , the hace Foundation with a capital assets of 510,000 euros established by Klaus Karsten. Her responsibilities include promoting the use of semantic typography.
