The Humme is an approximately 18.8 km long, south-westerly and orographically left tributary of the Weser in the Lower Saxony district of Hameln-Pyrmont , which has its origin on the border with the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Lippe . Their source streams arise in North Rhine-Westphalia.

geography

course

The source streams of the Humme, Hummerbach and Dewesiek , arise in the North Rhine-Westphalian nature park Teutoburg Forest / Egge Mountains southwest of the Hohe Asch ( 371.5  m above sea  level ) at the Extertal hamlet of Hummerbruch . The source of the Hummerbach brook on the left, to which the Humme kilometering refers, lies at around 329  m and that of the Dewesiek on the right at around 335  m . Both source streams, which run mainly in easterly directions, unite south of a pond a little below the 170 m height line at river kilometer 15.45; its confluence lies on the border of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony and the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge and Weserbergland Schaumburg-Hameln nature parks .

After 150 m of flow on the state and nature park border, the Humme finally flows into Lower Saxony and into the last-mentioned nature park and from then on runs predominantly north-east. Shortly afterwards it passes through the hamlet of Duensen , which belongs to the Aerzen area, and then through the Reinerbeck district of Aerzen , after which the Uhlenbach flows into it. Thereafter, it passes through the district Arhorn to then - after receiving the cold Born and open out of the Grießebachs  - by the Aerzener nucleus and by the districts Selxen where the Beberbach opens, and United Berkel , where the Laatzer Bach receives to flow.

The Humme then flows through the Klein Berkel district of Hamelin and, after taking up the brook from the Wiengrund at a height of around 69  m , flows directly northeast of it into the Weser flowing to the North Sea . This means that there is an altitude difference of around 260 m between the source and the mouth. The Humme has an average water flow of 1.39 m³ / s here.

Natural allocation

The Humme arises as part of its two source streams in the natural spatial main unit group Upper Weserbergland (no.36) , in the main unit Lipper Bergland (364) and in the subunit Eastern Lipper Bergland (364.2) in the natural area Alverdissener Heights (364.23) - on the Hohe Asch . In addition to this natural area, it flows through the natural area Ärzener Talmulde (364.26). The river flows into the main unit Rinteln-Hamelner Weserland (366) and in the sub-unit Wesertal (366.0) directly after reaching the natural area Hamelin valley widening (366.03) into the Weser.

Protected areas

The Humme-Quellbach Hummerbach rises and flows in sections in the nature reserve (NSG) Hummerbachtal ( CDDA no. 329457; designated 1994; 67.75  hectares ) and in the landscape conservation area (LSG) Eastern Lipper Bergland (CDDA no. 555552916; 2007; 69 , 5663  km² ); its source brook Dewesiek runs in the LSGs Lipper and Pyrmonter Bergland (CDDA no. 555553081; 2007; 85.6555 km²) and Dewesiek (CDDA no. 555553103; 2007; 42.84 ha). Both source streams flow in sections in the LSG Hummebachtal with Dewesiek (CDDA no. 555553129; 2007; 17.52 ha). In the middle course, the Humme flows through the Beberbach-Humme-Niederung nature reserve between Aerzen and Selxen (CDDA no. 162350; 1997; 30 ha) and between Aerzen and Klein Berkel through the LSG Hummetal , which consists of two areas: western part (CDDA no . 321839; 1949; 1.764 km²) with three spatially separated areas and the eastern part (CDDA no. 321840; 1949; 86 ha).

particularities

Lobster jumping

In Klein Berkel , the so-called lobster jumping takes place every two years in summer , for which the river is temporarily dammed. The participants try to jump over the humme with dry feet with the help of a wooden pole, but only a few succeed.

Burning trough races

A burning trough race takes place in Groß Berkel every two years . The participants paddle from the Hummebrücke on the Koppelweg downstream to the Hummewehr. The tournament is held at the Altdorf Festival.

Pollution 2012

In 2012 several thousand sticklebacks, Mühlkoppen and brown trout perished in the Humme. The police determined a farmer who is said to have discharged larger amounts of manure with an installed pipe as a possible cause of the pollution.
