INRI - A Film of Humanity is a German silent film by Robert Wiene from 1923. In it, Wiene filmed the Passion of Christ with numerous well-known stars of the silent film era , based on a novel by Peter Rosegger .

Style and film review

An essential element of the film, which was released in cinemas in the USA under the title "Crown of Thorns", was the arrangement of the decorations, which made use of well-known representations in the visual arts . On the other hand, the film placed great emphasis on the effect of monumental mass scenes such as the Sermon on the Mount or the entry of Jesus from Nazareth into Jerusalem .

After its premiere , the film received not only positive reviews in the press . The Frankfurter Zeitung wrote:

"The great and real effect of the film, however, which should conquer the world, lies in the essence of the so often reviled cinema itself: namely in its silence, in the great silence that rests over the seven acts."

This silent film could or had to rely on a different effect than the many other later Bible adaptations that achieved their effect through the dialogues. However, the film did not achieve the same effect as Vienna's Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari .

“They had tried several times to film the life of Christ. But it was never a satisfactory work. Oscillating between bigotry and overly humanizing the Son of God, all films about Christ were unsuitable. Wiene tried a framework story in 1924. A murderer sees a passion play and is purified by the passion of Christ. Wiene had borrowed the material from a story by Peter Rosegger; the Passion was true to the plot of the synoptic Gospels . Of simple beauty, maternal, softly transfigured, Henny Porten was a Madonna as if painted by Raphael . Imaginative beauty, high-spirited, flirtatious, later with thick tears Asta Nielsen as the sinner Maria Magdalena. The Russian émigré Grigori Chmara, also a married husband of Nielsen, tried in vain in the film impossible role of Christ. "INRI" failed, despite Werner Krauss as Pontius Pilatus, despite Alexander Granach as Judas. "

- The mirror

The film is considered the first major German Bible feature film. Based on a novel, Wiene was concerned with a (religious) reorientation in the politically and economically uncertain time during production. The film adaptation of the life of Jesus was initially integrated into a framework plot that relates to the conflict between Christianity and communism . The sometimes exaggerated theatrics in the portrayal of the life of Jesus, however, led to criticism even then.

Erik Ode , then 12, played his first film role in INRI .
