Location of Iber in Lower Saxony

St. Johannis

Iber is a village and the southernmost town in the town of Einbeck in the Northeim district in Lower Saxony , somewhat remote at the foot of the Südlieth, a foothill of the Ahlsburg . It is crossed by the L543.

history

According to documented sources, the village of Iber is one of the oldest localities in the area of the city of Einbeck.

The first Lutheran sermon in the town was given by the monk of the Augustinian monastery in Einbeck, Nikolaus Mey, on the first Advent of 1539 in Iber. He worked there until his death in 1546 and was buried in the village church. In 1589 Johannes Letzner took over the pastor's position, in his chronicles it is noted:

"In 812 Grimhold de Ibera, to whom a desolate, desolate place - which is then called Iber - was given a fief after the conversion of Emperor Charlemagne to Saxony - donated a church and a parish here in honor of God and St. John the Baptist ."

The church was built on the manor . In 1183 a new church was built and given rich gifts by the lords of Iber. The village's electrical supply was established in 1911, and the water supply was built shortly thereafter in 1912.

Iber was incorporated on March 1, 1974 into the district of the city of Einbeck.

Culture and sights

  • The church is in the center, around it are the oldest houses in the village. The Evangelical Lutheran St. John's Church Congregation was merged with the St. Pancratius Church Congregation in Odagsen on October 1, 2011 to form the new Evangelical Lutheran Church Congregation Iber-Odagsen in Einbeck.
  • The parish of Iber is in possession of the so-called Niello chalice , which is important in art history , a communion chalice with an associated paten from around 1180. The Niello technique results from the fusion of silver with applied copper, lead and sulfur, black images on a silver background. The chalice is on permanent loan in the Kestner Museum in Hanover. The chalice was exhibited in a local bank in Dassel for a few weeks around 2007 .
