Ineos 1:59 Challenge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ineos 1:59 Challenge was a successful project to run a marathon under two hours. The event was held especially for Eliud Kipchoge on October 12, 2019 in the Austrian capital Vienna .

Due to rotating pacemakers , the supply of fluids by bicycle and the lack of an open competition, the performance could not be confirmed as a marathon world record and is not recognized as such by the IAAF .

Summary

Kipchoge at the 2018 London Marathon

There were several changes compared to the previous attempt in 2017. Instead of three participants, there was only one participant, the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, the world record holder in the marathon and reigning Olympic champion. Kipchoge set the marathon world record of 2:01:39 at the Berlin Marathon on September 16, 2018.

In the previous attempt, the Breaking2 on May 6, 2017 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Milan, he was the fastest participant and missed the two-hour goal by 25 seconds. He won the event by over six minutes. On May 6, 2019, the 65th anniversary of the four-minute mile, chemical multinational Ineos announced that Kipchoge would try again to run a marathon of under two hours at a company-sponsored event.

In the Ineos Challenge, Kipchoge were joined by forty-one pacemakers, who alternated twice each lap and ran in a "K" formation rather than the diamond formation chosen for the previous attempt. Each lap of the course comprised two 4.3-kilometer-long sections of the main avenue, with the turning points at the Lusthaus and Praterstern roundabouts at both ends of the avenue, in the Praterpark . The entire route has an incline of only 2.4 meters. Spectators were present during the attempt.

The organizers planned to hold the event on Saturday, October 12, 2019, but they had an eight-day reserve window in case of bad weather conditions. The experiment was started on October 12 at 8:15 a.m. CET . The organizers allowed a start time between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM, but chose 8:15 AM to maximize attendance. It was expected that the weather conditions would be dry, with a temperature of 9 ° C at the start and a temperature of 12 ° C at the finish.

Accessories and optimization strategies

The organizers of the experiment added many techniques during the run that cumulatively supported Kipchoge and the pacemakers:

Lasers controlled the pacemaker and main runner so that they could run at a precise pace and no energy was lost through unwanted acceleration. The route has been carefully selected to ensure that no effort is wasted fighting the wind or changing direction or incline. This was achieved by the fact that most of the route was lined with tall trees which reduced the wind and that the route was very flat. The location of the race was chosen because its time zone was near Kaptagat , Kenya , where Kipchoge trains. This meant that Kipchoge was not jet lagged and his sleeping and eating behavior was not disturbed. The route was chosen to run at a low altitude to increase the oxygen content of the air and thus increase performance. Kipchoge wore an upgraded version of Nike's previously unreleased Vaporfly Next% running shoes that were supposed to improve running economy by 4 percent. The V-shaped arrangement of the pacemakers protected the runner from wind resistance. In an earlier attempt a differently shaped diamond formation was used. In order to save time, the catering was carried out by a team coordinator on a bike and not in the usual water station method.

The Breaking2 attempt took place behind closed doors in Monza , with only a few press representatives and Nike employees present. Missing a crowd there, Kipchoge requested that the public be allowed to watch Ineos' 1:59 challenge.
