The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research ( German : United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research ) ( UNIDIR ) is a United Nations research institution in the field of security and arms control based in Geneva .
history
The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) was founded in 1980 by the UN General Assembly to inform states and the world community on issues of international security ( Chapter I of the Charter of the United Nations ), to support efforts towards disarmament and to make progress to more security and to facilitate economic and social development for all.
Recognizing the need for objective, empirical and comprehensive research into disarmament and security, the UN General Assembly stipulated that UNIDIR should be an autonomous unit in the United Nations system and that its work can thus be carried out with scientific independence. The director of UNIDIR reports every year to the UN General Assembly on the institute's activities.
UNIDIR is headquartered in Geneva , the international center for security and disarmament, the location of the UN Conference on Disarmament (UNCD) and a global focus for humanitarian issues such as human rights, displacement, migration, health and work.
UNIDIR's work is funded by contributions from governments and foundations.
