Itapúa is a department in Paraguay , it is one of a total of 17 administrative districts . It is bordered to the north by the Caazapá and Alto Paraná departments , to the west by the Misiones department and to the south and east by the Río Paraná , on the other side of which is the Argentine province of Misiones .

The first inhabitants of this region were the Guaraní , the name Itapúa could therefore be derived from the Guaraní vocabulary Itá Púa (erect stone) or Itá Púva (sounding stone).

Today in Itapúa live next to the descendants of the Guaraní and the Spanish immigrants also the descendants of numerous other nations . The districts of Bella Vista , Capitán Meza , Hohenau , Nueva Alborada and Obligado are German colonies, and the districts of Fram , La Paz and Pirapó were founded by the Japanese .

About 60 percent of the population lives in the districts of Encarnación , San Pedro del Paraná , Tomás Romero Pereira , Edelira , Natalio , Capitán Meza , San Rafael del Paraná , Alto Verá and Coronel Bogado . Between 1982 and 1992 the population grew by 3.6 percent.

In the north of Itapúa, the southern part of the Serranías de San Rafael National Park extends over the districts of San Rafael del Paraná , Tomás Romero Pereira , Edelira , Itapúa Poty , Alto Verá and San Pedro del Paraná . The northern part belongs to the Caazapá department .

Culture

In the districts of Jesús and Trinidad there are ruins of former Jesuit reductions . They were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 11, 1993 . Another reduction can be found in San Cosme y Damián .
