Johann Kupetzky
Jan Kupecký , also Johann Kupecky , Kupezky or Czech January Kupecký (* probably in 1667 in Bazin / Bösing, Kingdom of Hungary , today Pezinok , Slovakia, † 16th July 1740 in Nuremberg ) was a Bohemian portrait painter of the Baroque .
Life
Kupetzky came from a deeply religious weaver family . His parents belonged to the Bohemian Brothers , who fled to the Kingdom of Hungary (now Slovakia ) because of their beliefs . Kupetzky grew up there and also received his first artistic lessons. In the spring of 1682, Kupetzky went to Switzerland to study painting in Lucerne . A few years later he studied at the Vienna Academy . Supported by his teachers there, Kupetzky went on a study trip to Italy around 1685. In Rome he worked as a freelance painter for over 22 years. In addition to historical and landscape paintings , his artistic work from these years also included many portraits , for which he would later become well known.
Around 1708/09 , after an appointment by Prince Adam of Liechtenstein , Kupetzky returned to Austria and settled in Vienna . His portraits soon made him a favorite of Emperors Leopold I and Joseph I and thus of the entire Viennese nobility . This called Neider on the scene, whereby Kupetzky was easily attackable through his denomination. Challenges about his belief finally drove Kupetzky from Vienna in 1723 and he settled in Nuremberg.
The portraits that Kupetzky had created and in which his high painterly ability and the psychological understanding of the portrayed personality are combined, became famous not least for their reproductions in printmaking .
After his death, Kupetzky was said to have been a member of the secret society " Wolfsorden ", but this was never proven.
In Vienna, where he had lived for a long time, Kupetzkygasse was named after the artist in 1953 .
student
Numerous draperies in the works of Johann Kupetzky come from the hand of Gabriel Müller , nicknamed Kupetzky-Müller, who was considered to be Kupetzky's best student. Other students were Joh. Andreas Brendel, Samuel Gottlieb Hanrich, Johann Noah von Bemmel, Franz Ignaz Roth and Conrad Mannlich .
meaning
Kupetzky was one of the best portraitists of his time. Kupetzky could not follow his example Rembrandt in everything. Its coloring looks a bit heavy today, but it was entirely in keeping with the fashion of the time. His extensive life's work is estimated at around 15,000 pictures.
