action

Germany, early 16th century. The painter Jörg Ratgeb is looking for a young man who should be his model for a picture that is supposed to represent Jesus Christ . Under this pretext five men introduce themselves to him who are in fact members of the Bundschuh movement . They want Ratgeb to renew the colors on their Bundschuh flag, which he himself painted under false conditions four years ago. When he refuses, because he does not agree with the methods and goals of the federal government, they burn many of his pictures and also one of Albrecht Dürer , but advice cannot be softened.

Since he is still looking for his Jesus Christ, he leaves his partner, a serf, whom he cannot marry, as well as his children to go to Albrecht Dürer's way. He is robbed on the way and now only has a shirt, his wallet and his horse. With a young peasant woman, a widow, he gets things from her husband, who was hanged for illegal fishing, and a place in her bed. When the bailiff catches the young men of the village fishing again, he stipulates that Ratgeb is the leader and wants to kill him immediately with the sword. The young peasant woman remembers her husband's death and tears him off his horse. He is being held by the others and wrapped in straw and set on fire by her. Advice, who everyone in the village thinks is a Bundschuh man, now has the opportunity to flee. On this he meets a group of pilgrims in which he can hide from the persecutors. However, this group is part of the Bundschuhs who take him to their headquarters. Here he meets the five men who have devastated his studio, whose leader is Joß Fritz . Ratgeb has to experience how the Bundschuhmann Thomas Niedler, as the executioner elected by the community, executes his friend Christoph Enderlin, because he was sentenced to death because of the deductible of a small sum of money. Ratgeb is charged as a spy who has sneaked into the realm of justice. Death likes espionage and Ratgeb is condemned to this. Joß Fritz is now looking for one of the women who asks for advice on preserving life, which is possible, but none can be found. Only when Joß almost forces a young, mute girl to ask for her release, Ratgeb is released with her and abandoned far from the camp.

Ratgeb and the girl, whom he calls Barbara, set off on the further path together. Above all, he will wash her at the next lake first, because she is completely filthy and lice and then he tries to make a person out of her, as he calls it. One day they meet a juggler who is practicing the role of Jesus on the cross with his family in a quiet area. Barbara immediately steals a piece of meat that is waiting on the grill to be cooked, but it can be snatched away from her. During the night Ratgeb manages to escape and leave Barbara behind. A little later he sees the juggler, who was formerly a monk, parked in a town. He hears from a trader that a man has sought refuge in the church who is suspected of belonging to the Bundschuh. The soldiers chasing him are only allowed to enter the house of God after the bishop has arrived . Then Ratgeb sees the juggler balancing on the roof and knows immediately that this is the refugee who is falling to his death after a short speech. Ratgeb is arrested and meets Barbara again in Bishop's prison, whom he claims to be his foster daughter. He wants to paint the bishop and gets that he and Barbara are allowed into his rooms. However, the bishop cannot be dissuaded from burning the girl at the stake. When Ratgeb threatens him with a dagger and demands her release, it is not certain whether she is still alive. In any case, he enforces his freedom.

Now his path leads on to Albrecht Dürer. His wife receives him with rejection and says that her husband is traveling, but gives him something to eat. Then she shows him the premises and Ratgeb takes a valuable vase to drop it on purpose. In this way he succeeds in getting Albrecht Dürer to appear, who is still in the house, which Ratgeb has suspected for a long time. He refuses the offer to stay in the house forever and goes back home to defend himself against the injustices in this world.

On the way he meets a group of people who go to the church fair on boats . Among them is Thomas Niedler, the Bundschuhmann. They are stopped by soldiers who are looking for Bundschuh members. Since they cannot determine exactly who of the many people belongs to it, they always let two men roll the dice for death on the gallows . Thomas and Ratgeb also form such a pair and Thomas loses the game. That is the moment when Ratgeb acknowledges the Bundschuh. His future pictures call for an uproar.

criticism

In New Germany , Horst Knietzsch said :

“Stephan staged Jörg Ratgeb, painter, with provocative suggestion, with the invitation to every viewer. to examine his own point of view and his sense of love and humanity. The international cast also makes the film worth seeing. "

Günter Sobe remarked in the Berliner Zeitung :

“It becomes clear that you didn't want the historical, colorful picture sheet. That can only mean: one strived for philosophical dimensions, social obligations and psychological depth. But as a result, the film lacks maturity and experience all too clearly at every nook and cranny. "

In the criticism of the Neue Zeit , Helmut Ullrich, after he praised the film extremely, sticks:

“But all of this doesn’t get over the fact that the ideal main line has too little tension, that the main character is far less interesting than other characters, that the plot rolls along a bit clumsily. The seriousness of the thought and the demands of the film in particular let us feel that. "

The Lexicon of International Films writes that the film is a wide-ranging painting of the times and is ambitiously designed. At times the thoughtful film, which is visibly based on Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev, is lost in action elements.
