The Jako AG (proper spelling JAKO ), headquartered in Hollenbach , in the municipality of Mulfingen in Baden-Württemberg Hohenlohe , a German manufacturer of team sportswear.

The company is named after the location where Jako was founded in Stachenhausen , between the Jagst and Kocher rivers .

history

The Jako company was founded on November 1st, 1989 in a garage in Stachenhausen by Rudi Sprügel. The aim of the company was to equip all football clubs between the rivers Jagst and Kocher, which give them their name. The idea came to Sprügel, who had worked in a sports shop himself because he had noticed the lack of service and the long delivery times of larger brands.

At the beginning of his business activity Jako did a much better job than Sprügel had expected. In the first year his company exceeded the planned sales by 300%. More years of strong growth followed, and in 1994 the company had sales in the double-digit millions. Just in time for its tenth birthday, the company was able to announce its first major success in sponsorship: From then on, SC Freiburg wore Jako jerseys - as the first club in the top German soccer league. In 2014 Jako was a partner of more than 100,000 amateur and professional clubs in various sports. A blue logo with two bars has stood for the brand since 2008, its elements symbolizing the Jagst and Kocher rivers.

In April 2016, a new logistics and administration center was under construction. From summer 2016, Bayer Leverkusen was the first time a top Bundesliga team and regular participants in international competitions wore Jako clothing. The newspaper Handelsblatt had the headline: "JAKO - from medium-sized companies to the Champions League". From the 2019/20 season, the company will also equip VfB Stuttgart .

philosophy

Jako sees himself as a specialist in team sports equipment, which is why the company chose “We are Team” as its brand claim in 2015. Jako now stocks more than 300 items and more than 30,000 possible variants of sportswear.

Social commitment plays a major role at Jako. The company is a member of the "Social Fair" initiative of the Association of Manufactured Goods Importers, so it is committed to a number of standards relating to fair trade and fair production conditions. Jako has also drawn up a code of conduct for suppliers, which is monitored through regular visits to the production facilities. The company has set itself the goal of purchasing electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources.

Business activity

The company produces team and sportswear. In the recent past Jako has expanded its product range to include the Jako-Premium leisure collection .

Products

The focus in Jako's product range is on the sport of soccer. The company sells collections divided into several so-called team lines, which consist of tracksuits , hooded jackets, T-shirts and other functional training clothing . Hardware such as glued, hand-sewn and machine-sewn balls, goalkeeper gloves and shin guards are also part of the range. Jako also makes the official match balls for the English National League. In the Indoor collection , Jako brings together team sports equipment for the sports of hand, volleyball and basketball. A running collection completes the equipment for training and competition. The Jako-Dots design element has been characteristic of Jako products since 2014 ; the dots are intended to ensure recognition value in conjunction with the brand logo. Sporty casual wear makes up the smaller part of the product range. Jako produces T-shirts, polo shirts and jackets for everyday use away from the sports field under the collection name Basic .

Sponsorship

The company is an outfitter for a number of well-known teams in various sports. The table shows a selection of the various sponsorship activities sorted by country, sport and club. An X in the field for the corresponding year number means that Jako has equipped the corresponding team that year. The list is likely not to be exhaustive.

Awards

The sporting goods manufacturer was awarded for various achievements.

In 2014 Jako received the “Hidden Champion Award” in silver from the television broadcaster n-tv. The jury stated: “Jako (...) is pursuing continuous and healthy growth. But not only the brand management is convincing, social commitment is also part of the corporate philosophy. "

In the same year, the German sports retailers voted the company first in the "performance index" of the specialist retail magazine "markt intern". The sports retailers awarded the marks in various categories such as design, support and delivery capability.

Media presence

In the fall of 2009 Jako attracted media attention. Jako had warned a blogger who made derogatory comments about a new logo. Jako subsequently demanded the payment of a contractual penalty after the text in question was reproduced by a news aggregator . After public criticism, mainly in online media and the blogosphere , Jako waived financial claims against the blogger. When the blogger visited Hollenbach, the company and the blogger closed the case. The weblog “Netzpolitik.org” wrote in a review at the end of 2009: “Rudi Sprügel regretted that the 'dispute had unnecessarily stirred up'. It was unfortunate not to respond immediately to inquiries from bloggers and journalists: 'After all, we have nothing to hide' ”.

Pollutants

The Stiftung Warentest examined football fan jerseys on November 6, 2009, including the jerseys of the Bundesliga soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt, which is equipped by Jako . Stiftung Warentest had objected to plasticizers in the foamed sponsor imprint on the red and black home jerseys for the 2009/2010 season, which are permitted for textiles but forbidden for toys in the EU. Due to this high level of pollution, the jerseys were rated “poor” and were therefore temporarily taken out of sale by Eintracht Frankfurt. Since only children's jerseys were evaluated in the test, the testers pointed out that, in their opinion, the use of phthalates ( plasticizers ) should also be prevented on these. The jersey was otherwise completely harmless and received the grade “very good (0.5–1.5)” in all further pollutant-relevant tests.
