The Catholic parish church St. Jakobus the Elder is the parish church of the parish Greding in the deanery Roth-Schwabach in the diocese of Eichstätt and is consecrated to the apostle Jakobus the elder . It is a listed building and bears the mark of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict .

history

In 1448, a church dedicated to St. Jacob consecrated chapel in Greding testified. A successor building mentioned in 1629 was destroyed in 1633 in the Thirty Years War .

The foundation stone for the new building was laid on August 20, 1725. The construction was carried out according to plans by Gabriel de Gabrieli . Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig Schenk von Castell consecrated the church on October 17, 1728. The parish church remained St. Martin for the time being , although the Jakobuskirche was easier to reach for the population of the city.

Building description

The church is not faces east , but directed roughly north. During the exterior renovation in 1935, a portrait of Maria Immaculate and the all-seeing eye of God was attached to the outside . The stained glass windows show the birth of Jesus , the discovery of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple, the crucifixion of Jesus , the resurrection of Christ , the ascension of Christ and Christ as Lord of the World.

Inside the church, the confessionals , the pulpit , the church stalls and the stucco come from the construction period. The stucco in the style of coupled pilasters based on a design by Gabriel de Gabrieli, who was commissioned by the Gredingen judges Bschaidel, was carried out by the Eichstätter plasterer Franz Xaver Horneis . The drapery over the archway to the chancel shows the coat of arms of Joseph von Stubenberg .

The pulpit is entered through the sacristy and the pulpit back wall. An angel with a trumpet can be seen on the pulpit ceiling. The type of stucco decoration points to an early work by Horneis.

Only one of the original baroque frescoes by Matthias Zink remains on the first gallery. It shows St. Jacob together with St. Martin, the patron of the previous parish church . The five other paintings show scenes from the life of Mary : the Annunciation to Mary , the birth of Jesus , the flight to Egypt , Jesus in his parents 'house and Jesus' farewell to his mother. They were inserted during the renovation in 1932/1933.

Ceiling painting

The ceiling paintings are by Sebastian Holzner from Amberg and were painted in the Nazarene style in 1875 . The decapitation of St. James is shown above the organ. The picture next to it represents a tradition from the Legenda aurea : The high priest Abjathar and the magician Hermogenes try to dissuade James from believing. The large picture in the middle of the ceiling shows James in the pilgrim's robe and a flag that identifies him as Matamoros . He steps in front of Mary with the baby Jesus on his lap. The angels at his side hold the martyr's crown and a book in their hands. The picture in the front of the chancel with a shield and sword in the foreground indicates that James is, among other things, the patron saint of warriors. Above it you can see how James appears to Hermogenes in chains. The representations on the side in the middle are for the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary . The corners of the ceiling are filled by the evangelists: Luke with the ox, Mark with the lion, Matthew with the angel and John with the eagle. The ceiling of the choir takes the Lord's Supper .

High altar

Sanctuary

The high altar comes from the former Augustinian canons of Rebdorf . In 1806 the parish church foundation bought it . The altar is the work of the Eichstatt court sculptor Matthias Seybold in the early Rococo style . It was created from 1732 to 1734 on the occasion of the Baroque renovation of the Rebdorf monastery church. Two white gilded wooden statues depict John the Baptist who refers to Jesus as the Lamb of God. The representation is a reference to the Johannespatrozinum of the Rebdorf monastery church. The altarpiece comes from the previous high altar, made in 1742/1745 and donated by Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig. Due to a renovation in 1924, it is difficult to assign the picture to a specific painter stylistically. It probably comes from the workshop of Johann Georg Bergmüller . In the middle is Greding with its city wall, its churches and other buildings of the time. In front of it, St. James kneels in front of the Most Holy Trinity depicted in heaven : God the Father depicted as Lord of the World , the Redeemer Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove; James asks protection for Greding.

The people's altar , ambo and lecture cross were made in 2003 by the Munich artist Carola Heine in a modern style that stands out from the previous style. On October 17, 2003, the 275th consecration day of the church, the altar was consecrated by Vicar General Johann Limbacher . In the altar were other relics of Blessed Adolf Kolping , of St. Columbanus and St. Felix , a Roman martyr embedded.

Side altars

The side altars were acquired from the Eichstätter Jesuit Church in 1735 . They were created when that church was rebuilt in 1640 and later had to make way for new altars. The altar paintings (Maria on the left altar and Josef on the right, both with the baby Jesus in their arms) were repainted for Greding. These were painted over in the 19th century, which also makes the assignment difficult here. They are possibly works by the Eichstatt painter Joseph Dietrich .

Way of the Cross

The overall impression of the church is shaped by the 14 oversized Stations of the Cross pictures. They were painted in the Baroque style in 1764 by the Beilngries painter Johann Michael Schäfer and in 1875 by Sebastian Holzner in the Nazarene style . The first station of the cross is the closest to the starting point.

Bells

The Jakobuskirche has only two small bells in the roof. Tasks such as ringing for church services and the death bell are performed by the ringing of St. Martin's Church on the Calvary north of the parish church.

Way of St. James

The Way of St. James does not pass Greding and therefore the church. In the Esselberg district , the Way of St. James between Nuremberg and Eichstätt touches the municipality.
