Jefferson is a town in Lincoln County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 lived there 2427 inhabitants in 1010 households on an area of 151.72 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Jefferson has a total area of 151.72 km², of which 136.16 km² are land and 15.57 km² are water .
Geographical location
Jefferson is in north Lincoln County. It is bordered by Kennebec County to the west and Knox County to the east . To the east lies Damariscotta Lake , from which the Damariscotta River flows south. In the northwest bordering Long Pond to, on the west of the Clary Lake . Dyer Long Pond is located in the center of the town . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Jefferson was settled a few years before the American Revolutionary War . Initially, Jefferson and Whitefield belonged to the Ballstown Plantation area . On February 24, 1807 Jefferson was organized as an independent town and named after the incumbent President Thomas Jefferson .
Land was given to Alna in 1816 and 1824. The area that had been given up in 1824 was returned to Jefferson in 1907. In 1829 parts of the Patricktown Plantation, now called Sommerville, were given to Jefferson. Territories were given to Newcastle in 1858.

The Maine State Route 126 and Maine State Route 17 extend in west-east direction by Jefferson, in north-south direction extend the Maine State Route 215 and Maine State Route 213 . Maine State Route 32 runs northwest to southeast .

There are no medical facilities or hospitals in Jefferson. The closest are in Damariscotta, Waldoboro, Augusta and Gardiner.

education
Jefferson belongs to the Central Lincoln County School System, AOS 93 , with Bremen, Bristol, Damariscotta, Newcastle, Nobleboro and South Bristol . Secondary schools are not offered by the school district, schools of choice can be attended, the costs are borne by the municipalities. Most of the students attend the private Lincoln Academy in Newcastle .
