history

Jefferson was settled a few years before the American Revolutionary War . Initially, Jefferson and Whitefield belonged to the Ballstown Plantation area . On February 24, 1807 Jefferson was organized as an independent town and named after the incumbent President Thomas Jefferson .

Land was given to Alna in 1816 and 1824. The area that had been given up in 1824 was returned to Jefferson in 1907. In 1829 parts of the Patricktown Plantation, now called Sommerville, were given to Jefferson. Territories were given to Newcastle in 1858.
