Jet is an Australian rock band that split up after eleven years and three albums in 2012, but reformed in 2016.

history

The brothers Nic and Chris Cester lived in Dingley, a suburb of Melbourne . The two-year-older Nic said Soul , R & B and rock music from the Beat The Who more than the grunge , the round was heard by their peers. Chris had rummaged through his father's record inventory and discovered an outstanding album among his tastes, namely Abbey Road by the Beatles . Inspired in this way, they put the tennis racket guitar imitation and improv drums aside, closed the chapter on the imaginary band “The Boys”, learned to play guitar and drums properly around 1996, jammed together fraternally and founded one in 2001 with Cameron Muncey, another guitarist Tape. The name should be short and sparkling, and if possible have a reference to the Beatles: they chose “Jet”, the title of a Paul McCartney song from 1973. The singer position fell to Nic, at least the full-time one, because the others also took over Vocal parts. Doug Armstrong, a colleague of the brothers at work, was offered the opportunity to play bass. A former school friend of Chris by the name of Jason Doukas also played keyboards at the beginning, but didn't stick with it. They rehearsed in a cleared corner of a warehouse at the spice factory, where Nic worked as a forklift driver and Chris as a truck driver. During 2002, Mark Wilson replaced Armstrong. He actually wanted to be a history teacher and only played bass in another local band in his spare time. When they met on a pleasure tour in Melbourne's nightlife , Wilson was offered the opportunity to participate in an upward-looking project, so he hesitated to accept, which was only given after some thought over the phone. When the formation was finally in place, all members were 22 years plus or minus one year old. The brothers had several years of jobs under their belt, with Nic it had already been five years, and they now gave up.

The first concerts took place at a time when another Australian band, The Vines , was celebrating great international success. The Jet musicians acted like AC / DC live . Musically they continue the tradition of the Kinks , with a modern touch of oasis . In addition to mostly self-written and carefully rehearsed pieces, their program also included the Elvis Presley number That's Alright, Mama . 2002 was left on its own a vinyl - EP in a thousand-circulation press, which was sold completely. Dirty Sweet was actually only demo quality as it was recorded in seven hours. A follow-up edition of the same amount for England was also completely canceled. Jet followed up with a single in 12 "format , financed by the proceeds, with the only three-minute-long composition Take It or Leave It , which was celebrated in the New Musical Express , which, in connection with the famous EP sell-out, prompted Elektra , Jet under contract and the EP in the regular program, where it was to be had again from May 2003. Having arrived in the professional business, Jet was allowed to open the Australian shows for the Rolling Stones in spring 2003 .

The first externally financed recordings took the band to the Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles . Dave Sardy , who had already been entrusted to The Dandy Warhols and Marilyn Manson , was hired to work as a producer . Beatles legend Billy Preston played Hammond organ twice on the album Get Born , which was released in October 2003, for a handsome fee that did not allow Beatles fans to spend much time talking . On the band's homepage they wrote that it sounded like trying to compete with the Ramones . The riffing brought about associations with AC / DC among reviewers. The New Musical Express stayed true to its line and praised the work over the clover. The single Are You Gonna Be My Girl quickly became a radio hit. Different B-side songs were added in the individual regions of the world . In Germany there were even two different recordings of Are You Gonna Be My Girl , each with different additions. The diversity was evident from the fact that there was a “CD1” with a blue title lettering and a “CD2” with a red title lettering, but otherwise the same cover . The album benefits from the single hit and soon sold three million copies. Later it would be just under four million copies. There were seven Australian Recording Industry Association nominations, six of which were actually won. In order to be able to introduce themselves live to the many CD buyers who have become fans and to the still neutral curious concert goers, the band concentrated on touring. She came to Germany in spring 2004. In summer 2005 Jet took part in the politically motivated Live 8 concert near Toronto . The band performed three songs and was part of the All Star Ensemble under Neil Young's leadership, which ended with a performance of Rockin in the Free World . Afterwards the own touring program was continued, during which Jet joined the Oasis tour in Europe. A year earlier, during the world tour in the summer of 2004, the brothers' father had died and emotionally they had fallen into a hole. The fact that John Cester had been seriously ill with cancer for a long time did not diminish the emotional crash. After all, he was only 45 years old. After coping with grief for different lengths of time, both had realized that music was the way to get out of the depths and regain the joy of life. This was the beginning of work on the follow-up album. Fifty ideas eventually turned into 15 songs that were worked out in six months. Each has its own special reminiscences , be it Curtis Mayfield or The Beach Boys . The title track Shine On comes - and the name suggests - close to the Pink Floyd classic Shine On You Crazy Diamond and is dedicated to the late father. Other, tracked by the music magazines, reminiscences: The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Beatles almost goes without saying again, namely at All You Have to Do . Chris Cester emphasized the fact that in addition to the ballads there was also punk and named Stand Up and That's All Lies . Commenting on the production, Cameron Muncey said, “After traveling the world and playing in huge stadiums, we wanted the songs to have a bolder, more powerful sound. We want to address as many people as possible with this album. "

The first sessions and recordings were carried out in Barbados, at the end of the completion chain were the Hillside Manor Studios in Los Angeles, where again under the direction of Dave Sardy, the meanwhile popular bands such as Oasis, Dirty Pretty Things , Primal Scream and others. a. had produced, at Shine On worked. It was released in October 2006. According to the guitar and bass , it's a “mega flop”. For Allmusic the record just went badly. Laut.de complained that the alleged expressiveness and spontaneity would turn out to be an imitation of AC / DC and Rolling Stones and that the collection of ballads represented a Guns n 'Roses- like emotional drudgery. The album received a different assessment in the intro . There it was said that it was “more complex and more ambitious”. The Eclipsed also called it a “masterpiece” . WOM Magazine , which wanted to arouse buying interest , immediately gave it the ennoblement of a “timeless classic”. Far fewer copies were sold worldwide than the predecessor and certainly the predecessor, but the chart placements would have done credit to other bands.

Jet continued to tour. The pressure was enormous and the escape into drugs was so easy. It took a while to realize that and to draw conclusions. Nic Cester took a year off when it was possible. He, who had been to Italy several times before, moved to Como , bought a house there, in memory of his great-grandfather, who had left northern Italy after the war to start over in Australia. In the meantime, Elektra had been taken over by Atlantic . Suddenly the record company not only had new employees, but also a new direction, which Jet no longer suited. A change of label seemed inevitable. The band got into a real crisis, in which the common basis was called into question, but Chris Cester and Cam Muncey remained staunch and pushed ahead with album planning. In 2008 work began on the third album Shaka Rock , which was released in August 2009. The response to this was disappointing. The reviewer from laut.de saw it ambiguously: It offers fast, danceable beat sound in addition to cozy rock for at home. What is missing, however, is “the new, surprising, what the band name promises”.

On March 26th, 2012 the musicians announced the breakup via their homepage and Facebook :

From the many pubs, theaters, stadiums and festivals all across the world it was the fans that made our amazing story possible and we wish to thank them all. Thank you, and goodnight. ”

style

The style term Garage Rock is often used. Nic Cester: "We don't really like being pigeonholed in the garage rock band." The term retro rock is just as common.
