He has announced that he will be leaving Apple in late 2019 and starting his own company. As of November 2019, he is no longer listed as a member of the board of directors on the Apple website. Life

education

Jonathan Ive's father was a silversmith who worked at a college. Every Christmas he gave his son a day in his workshop to build exactly what he wanted. The prerequisite for this was that the young Ive had thought carefully about his project beforehand and made a detailed drawing. When I was 13-14 years old, Ive had the idea of taking up a creative profession, something “with a pen in hand”.

Ive attended Chingford Foundation School, then Walton High School in Staffordshire, England, and studied at the Newcastle Polytechnic Art School at Northumbria University in Northeast England, where he graduated in product design in 1989 . After completing his studies, he became a partner in the design agency Tangerine in London. a. Made product designs for Nokia or Samsung .

Designer at Apple

From 1992 Ive worked for Apple - initially as a consultant to Robert Brunner (Chief of Industrial Design), later on a permanent basis. He developed the design of the second generation of the Newton MessagePad 110 . He was given more creative freedom than he was able to set up a small design team with selected employees and create the design of the iMac together with them . In 1997, Steve Jobs returned to Apple and promoted the newly developed design of the iMac made of colored, semi-transparent plastic; so far, gray housings have dominated the PC industry.

From that point on, Ive was responsible for designing the entire Apple product line. His designs were influenced by the work and principles of Dieter Rams , who was Braun's chief designer from 1961 to 1995 . The iPhone calculator was thought to be a digital version of Rams' Braun device. Lots of white and angular shapes were reminiscent of Rams' stereos. He also oriented himself towards the Bauhaus and the Ulm School . Ive's most important designs include the iMac: iBook , MacBook Pro (Unibody) , Power Mac G4 Cube , iPod , iPhone , PowerMac G5 and iPad . The transparent Apple iSub loudspeakers ("Soundstick" by Harman Kardon ) designed by him have been added to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art .

Since October 2012 he has also been responsible for the design of the graphical user interface for Apple software. The first big project here was the complete overhaul of the iOS operating system and the change from skeuomorphic to flat design . He was jointly responsible for the design of the Apple Park .

Royal Art College

Ive received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in 2009 .

On May 25, 2017, it was announced that Ive had been appointed Chancellor of the RCA in London with effect from July 1, 2017.In this position, he will serve as Head of the College for a fixed term of five years , where he will serve as the College's Academic Administrator will guide. Ive began chairing committee meetings, attending faculty meetings, and awarding graduate degrees in the summer of 2017.

Commenting on the appointment, I've said, "I'm thrilled to be formalizing my relationship with the RCA, given the profound impact the college has had on so many artists and designers I admire".

On June 27, 2019, Ive announced that I would be leaving Apple and starting his own design company LoveFrom .

Private life

Jonathan Ive met his wife at school; they married in 1987. They have two sons and live in San Francisco .

I've preferred to be called Jony .

Design philosophy

Jonathan Ive realizes his designs according to the principle " form follows function ". He devotes his attention u. a. the study of details and the possibilities for improvement and reduction contained in them. He tried to optimize and reduce the display and operating options of the iPhone to such an extent that people who had never had the device in their hands could quickly learn to use it. Ive often uses polished aluminum for the current Apple products , for example for the unibody cases.
