José Tolentino Cardinal Calaça de Mendonça (born December 15, 1965 in Machico , Autonomous Region Madeira , Portugal ) is a Portuguese Roman Catholic clergyman and cardinal curia . Since 2018 he has been the archivist of the Vatican Apostolic Archives and librarian of the Vatican Apostolic Library in the Roman Curia . He is also known as a poet . He signs his works as José Tolentino Mendonça .

Life

family

The youngest of five brothers, José Tolentino de Mendonça, was born on December 15, 1965 in Machico , Madeira Autonomous Region , Portugal . However, in the early years of his childhood he lived on the coast of Angola , where his father was a fisherman. He left Africa at the age of 9 when the Portuguese colonies were independent.

Formation and priesthood

Tolentino Mendonça began in 1982 at the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon the study of Catholic theology (UCP), which he in 1989 with the Licentiate completed. In 1989 he completed his theology degree at UCP. In 1990 he published his first collection of poems, Os dias contados . In 1992 he received a licentiate in Biblical Exegesis of Biblical Studies from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and in 2004 a Doctor of Biblical Theology from the UCP.

On July 28, 1990 he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Funchal through Bishop Teodoro de Faria . From 1992 to 1995 he worked as a priest in the parish of Nossa Senhora do Livramento in Funchal, after which he was a priest in Lisbon for 5 years at the UCP, in the parish of Santa Isabel and since 2010 rector of the Chapel of Our Lady da Bonanza, better known as Capela do Rato.

Academic career

The first years of Tolentino Mendonça's priestly life are also academic. He was Professor at the Funchal Seminary, Rector of the Pontifical Portuguese College in Rome , Professor at the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP). He joined the UCP as an assistant (1996-1999) when teaching Biblical Hebrew and lecturing on "Christianity and Culture". In 2004 he received his doctorate as Professor of New Testament and Theological Aesthetics at the UCP . Since 2005 he has also worked at the Centro de Estudos de Religiões e Culturas Cardeal Höffner and as director of the magazine Didaskalia . In 2012 the UCP appointed him Vice Rector and in 2018 Director of the Faculty of Theology. He was a Straus Fellow at New York University for a year and was part of a team of visiting researchers studying religion and public space .

Tolentino Mendonça was also visiting professor at the Catholic University of Pernambuco (Unicap), at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and at the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy and Theology (Faje) in Belo Horizonte .

Cultural and literary work

Closer to the cultural world through his extensive work, frequent publications and interventions in the media, Tolentino Mendonça was appointed first director of the National Secretariat for Pastoral Culture in 2004, which was then appointed by the Portuguese Bishops' Conference to facilitate dialogue between the Church and the to promote national cultural environment. He has held this position for 10 years.

In 2009, after a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI , Tolentino Mendonça confessed . with an artists meeting that the gesture of hospitality of the Pope was very much appreciated and that the Pope points out that “within the Church, within the Christian space [artist] has a home, they can feel at home.” In the year In 2011, Benedict XVI appointed Tolentino Mendonça as Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Culture . Pope Francis reappointed him in 2016.

In 2018, Tolentino Mendonça was invited by Pope Francis to lead the Lent Retreats of the Pope and the Roman Curia from February 18-23. He interpreted biblical pericopes and interpreted texts by Fernando Pessoa , Clarice Lispector , Françoise Dolto , Etty Hillesum and Blaise Pascal .

Cardinal Tolentino de Mendonça has been a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture since February 2020 , of which he was consultor between 2011 and 2018. In this council he is a member of the scientific commission on the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death .

On June 13th, 2020 he wins the European "Helena Vaz da Silva" award for his ability to promote beauty and poetry as part of the intangible cultural heritage of Europe and the world.

José Tolentino de Mendonça has published numerous collections of essays, spiritual writings, poems and sermons. He is considered to be one of the most original voices in contemporary Portuguese literature. His work includes poems, essays and plays. He has received numerous literary prizes.

Episcopate and Cardinalate

On 26 June 2018 it appointed Pope Francis to Titular Archbishop of Suava and the archivist and librarian of Holy Roman Church. He replaced the French Archbishop Jean-Louis Bruguès. He took office in the Roman Curia on September 1, 2018.

The Patriarch of Lisbon, Manuel José Cardinal Macário do Nascimento Clemente , donated him the episcopal ordination on July 28, 2018 in the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon. Co- consecrators were António Augusto Cardinal dos Santos Marto , Bishop of Leiria-Fátima and Teodoro de Faria, Bishop Emeritus of Funchal.

On September 1, 2019, Pope Francis announced that he would be admitted to the college of cardinals as a cardinal deacon in the solemn consistory of October 5, 2019 . At the creation of the cardinal, the Pope assigned him the title diakonia Santi Domenico e Sisto . The occupation of his title diakonia took place on December 15 of the same year. On February 21, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture .
