Josef Fischnaller (* 1964 in Grieskirchen ) is a visual artist from Austria who lives and works in Berlin .

life and work

Josef Fischnaller grew up in Austria. His father was the well-known Linz painter and sculptor Josef Fischnaller , through whom he received his first artistic impulses. Having grown up with art from an early age, he expressed his desire to become a painter at an early age. At the age of eleven, Fischnaller reoriented himself and discovered his love for photography , which remained with him throughout his life. He moved to Vienna and trained as a photographer from 1982 to 1986. In 1987 he founded his first studio in Wiener Neustiftgasse . First exhibition in 1988 at Steins in Vienna. In 2000 moved to Berlin. This is followed by exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, New York and Miami. In 2007 he founded a photo studio in Berlin. In the same year the first solo exhibition takes place in the Friedmann-Hahn gallery with the title " Adam & Eve ".

Josef Fischnaller first specialized in fashion photography as well as depictions of stage sets and opera performances . Above all, the engagement with light and opulent, alienated productions runs through his oeuvre as a leitmotif . On the one hand, there are the carefully staged portraits of prominent stage staff, such as the flautist Emmanuel Pahud or the mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato . Fischnaller's picture of the latter served as an official photo for the Dresden Semperball and the Berlin Philharmonic . In addition to the primarily depicting photographs, Josef Fischnaller developed an artistic work: based on the paintings of Old Masters of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque , he staged well-known faces in costumes. Andrea Sawatzki becomes Hans Holbein's portrait of Queen Elizabeth , Oscar winner Stefan Ruzowitzky becomes Hans Holbein's portrait of Henry VIII , track and field athlete Frederik Thomsen is transformed into Francois Clouet's Charles IX , and director Oliver Hirschbiegel finds himself in the portrait of Hans Holbein the younger of Queen Jane Seymour his new face, the model Natascha Haack slips into the role of Lucretia , originally painted by Lucas Cranach the Younger , Hannelore Elsner transforms into Maria de Medici and the model Till Birgkit imitated Caravaggio's Narcissus . Paintings by Marie-Guillemine Benoist , the Portrait d'une négresse , Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa or Piero di Cosimo's Simonetta Vespucci served as further models . Caravaggio remains his greatest role model and so Josef Fischnaller photographs with light, as Caravaggio once painted with it. Fischnaller does not use the art-historical quotations in order to imitate or to use the techniques of photography to depict what the painting depicted before him. He developed his own iconography : the former background of the Mona Lisa, an ideal landscape, became the Teufelsberg , West Berlin's most famous heap of rubble with the legendary, empty listening system of the US Army. Instead of the precious brocade that Holbein used to present it to us, Ferrero Rochers or chess pieces went to hand. This Dadaist revaluation has a principle: It wants to break with traditional viewing habits without overturning aesthetic ideals. At the same time it is also a humanistic admonition to the viewer not to rely on the fleeting, erroneous glance, but to look carefully in order to recognize what is true. The admonishing moment is then resolved with wit and punch .
