history

A settlement in the place of today's place was first mentioned in 1227, the actual today's settlement as a village (selo) in 1721. From the 18th century Jurino belonged to the Ujesd Vasilsursk of the Nizhny Novgorod governorate , a little above the confluence of the Wetluga . The low-lying town center is protected against flooding by a dam.

On August 28, 1924 Jurino became the seat of a canton of the Mari Autonomous Oblast, which existed from 1920 to 1936 , from which the Mari ASSR emerged . On December 10, 1931, the canton became part of the Gornomarijski rajon with its seat in Kosmodemjansk , 15 km northeast on the other side of the Volga, but was re-established with the 1936 constitution, now as a Rajon.
