King Drosselbart , also known as A Bride for King Drosselbart , is a Czechoslovakian - German film adaptation of the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm by Miloslav Luther from 1984.

action

On the occasion of Prince Michael's birthday, a group of jugglers put on a play. It is about a haughty princess who mockingly rejects every suitor, no matter how brave and honorable. The people are amused, but Queen Maria thinks the play is exaggerated. Even Prince Michael cannot imagine that there is such a proud and spoiled princess. The cast assure them that King Matthew's daughter, Princess Anna, was the inspiration for the play. She is very beautiful, but extremely haughty and of bad character. Prince Michael wants to form his own judgment, which is why he is traveling to the court of King Matthew with the actors. He sticks a fake beard to his chin and catches a first glimpse of the princess through a window when she wakes up in her bedchamber to a thrush fluttering around. Prince Michael is immediately fascinated by her beauty. He officially courted her, but like all other suitors before him, she turned him away and made fun of him. She would rather marry a beggar than "King Thrushbeard". Your father is angry. He has had enough of her arrogance and announced that his daughter will marry the first beggar who is the first to cross the threshold of the castle gate at dawn.

The following morning it was pouring rain and no beggar was in sight. A lone beggar dressed in rags is eventually found. To the surprise of King Matthew, Princess Anna stands by her word and, albeit hesitantly, lets herself be married to the beggar. Now the newly wedded couple is supposed to leave the kingdom and cross the border river. In the kingdom of Prince Michael, the couple settle in a cottage . While the beggar, who hides his allegedly disfigured face under his rags, works hard for her survival, Anna refuses to lift a finger. In order to be full, she pays the beggar with her jewelry. When she ran out of jewelry, she looked for food in the forest. There she meets a man who is harvesting honey. She takes a piece of his bread and clumsily breaks a jar of honey. She then tries to wash her dirty dress in the river. When she distracts a thrush hopping past, her dress floats away in the stream of the river. Since she now has to put on simple clothes like a beggar, she tries to return to her father's court. But the ferryman has been ordered not to let beggars across the river. When she asks for accommodation with Prince Michael, he only has a few alms left for her.

Out of necessity Anna returns to the beggar. He shows her how to do pottery because they have to make money to pay the taxes. But instead of saving, Anna uses what little money they have to buy a new dress. When the prince's debt collectors appear and the beggar cannot pay the taxes, the men take his food away. Anna's dress is also seized. When the beggar falls ill, Anna takes his place and goes to the market in the castle with the pottery jugs. When she disregards her small stand, it is destroyed by a horse-drawn carriage along with the pottery. In view of the unpaid taxes, the prince's steward captures the beggar and has the cottage barricaded.

In the castle it turns out that the beggar is the disguised Prince Michael who, with the help of the juggler, wants to teach Princess Anna an apprenticeship. King Matthew has also been initiated. Meanwhile, Anna arrives at the castle, where she works as an assistant to a cook. One day she brings a cage with a thrush. On the prince's orders, the thrush is to remain captive until the prince regains his lost appetite. Anna, who is diligently doing her job in the kitchen, keeps looking for the alleged beggar in his dungeon to bring him something to eat. He is the only one who matters to her. When she is supposed to bring the food to the prince and he asks what would make her happy, she rushes into the castle kitchen without recognizing him and releases the thrush trapped in the cage. She then goes to the dungeon again, where she no longer finds the beggar, and finally confesses to Prince Michael that she would do anything for him if he released the beggar in return. The fact that the beggar means more to Anna than her own life shows the prince that she is no longer haughty and selfish. He ends the masquerade and explains everything to her. But instead of falling around the prince's neck, the princess prefers to return to the Kate. There she wants to wait for her beggar, from whom she has learned who she really is. Prince Michael returns to her as a beggar and finds her crying. He declares his love for her and explains that despite all the disguises, he has always remained the same. They kiss and finally drive off in royal robes on a sleigh.
