Karl Ernst Peter Mannsfeld (born July 30, 1939 in Dresden ) is a German geographer and politician ( CDU ). He is married and has four kids.

Professional background

From 1958 Mannsfeld first studied German language and literature as a teacher and geography at the University of Leipzig and then from 1960 to 1963 geography at the TH / TU Dresden . He did his doctorate under Ernst Neef at the TU Dresden until 1971 . At the same time he worked from 1964 to 1966 as a research assistant at the Office for Territorial Planning Dresden and then from 1966 to 1992 from Dresden in the research project "Natural Balance and Territorial Character" of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig . In 1981 he completed his PhD B with the title “Contributions to the derivation of the natural potential structure from the natural spatial order” at the TU Dresden, which was converted into a habilitation in 1991. From 1993 until his retirement in 2002, Mannsfeld was Professor of Landscape Science / Geoecology at the Institute for Geography at TU Dresden.

Mannsfeld is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Erich Glowatzky Foundation and has been a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig since 1997 . He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation , Berlin.

politics

In 1974 Mannsfeld joined the GDR CDU . From 1990 to 2004 he was a member of the Saxon state parliament without an electoral district. There he was environmental policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group. From April 18, 2002 to November 10, 2004 he was Saxon Minister of State for Culture and Deputy Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony . From November 30, 2005 until the state elections in 2009, he was again a member of the Saxon state parliament, replacing Head of the Chancellery Thomas de Maizière .

Environmental commitment

Even before 1990 he was volunteering for the environment, especially landscape and nature conservation. In 1990 he was elected to the Saxon state parliament and has significantly influenced the adoption of Saxon environmental laws in almost three electoral terms. In 2006, in collaboration with the Saxon State Foundation for Nature and Environment, his book "Nature Conservation in the Tension Field of Social Interests" was published, which deals with the past and present of Saxon nature conservation.

Honors

1 June 2013 he was awarded the Saxon Landtag President Matthias Roessler of the natural and cultural heritage protection in recognition of its commitment in the design of Saxony, the Saxon Constitutional Medal .
