Karl Adolf Ferdinand von Strantz (born May 10, 1783 in Landsberg an der Warthe , † August 3, 1865 in Breslau ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Karl was the son of the Prussian Major General Hans von Strantz (1739–1815) and his second wife Luise Sophie, born von der Asseburg (1757–1846). His sister Henriette Helene Charlotte (1777–1863) was married to Major General Ludwig von Paulsdorff (1769–1830), his brother Ludwig Maximilian Sigismund (1788–1839) died as a colonel and commander of the 9th Hussar Regiment, another brother died 1813 near Leipzig.

Military career

Strantz joined his father's dragoon regiment as a junker in 1797 and was promoted to second lieutenant by June 1800 . During the Fourth Coalition War , he was taken prisoner in the battle of Auerstedt .

After the Peace of Tilsit he came on June 10, 1809 as the oldest secondary lieutenant in the Brandenburg Uhlan Regiment . There he rose to prime lieutenant at the beginning of October 1810 and took part in the campaign against Russia with his regiment alongside France . In Daugavpils he was wounded, fought at Krasnoje and suffered an injury again at Daugilischken. Strantz was awarded the Legion of Honor for his behavior in the Battle of the Beresina . At that time he was promoted to staff assistant master on November 10, 1812 . On February 18, 1813 King Friedrich Wilhelm III signed him. with the order Pour le Mérite . On March 8, 1813 Strantz advanced to Rittmeister and squadron chief .

During the Wars of Liberation he received a commendation for the Battle of the Katzbach , at the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig Strantz earned the Iron Cross II. Class and another commendation for Laon . He was also in the battles near Paris , Ligny and Belle Alliance as well as in the battles of Löwenberg, Goldberg, Bischofswerda, Reichenbach, Château-Thierry , Saint-Dizier and the transition near Wartenburg . On March 29, 1815 he was transferred to the 5th Uhlan Regiment as the oldest Rittmeister .

After the war, Strantz was aggregated as a major in the Guard Landwehr Cavalry Regiment at the end of March 1819, and on April 14, 1819, was appointed as a regular staff officer . On April 3, 1820, he joined the Guard Uhlan Regiment and on June 6, 1821 , he was in command as adjutant to Prince Friedrich of Prussia , who was in command of the 14th Division at the time . Left in this position, Strantz was aggregated to the Guard Cuirassier Regiment in 1822 . In 1825 he received the service cross and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Guelph Order on August 27, 1830 and the Order of St. John on November 21, 1830 . As a lieutenant colonel he was commissioned on November 13, 1834, initially to lead the 4th Cuirassier Regiment, and on September 9, 1835, Strantz was appointed regimental commander. In this capacity he was awarded the Order of St. Anne II on September 13, 1835 , and was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1836 . With his promotion to major general on April 7, 1842, Strantz was given command of the 14th Cavalry Brigade in Düsseldorf . On August 11, 1842 he was appointed commander of the Order of the Oak Crown and on September 12, 1842 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves . Under awarding of the character as a lieutenant general Strantz took on 15 May 1845 his farewell with an annual pension of 2250 thalers.

For his 50-year ownership of the order Pour le Mérite, King Wilhelm I awarded him the crown for this award on January 9, 1862. He died in Breslau on August 3, 1865.

Strantz married Sophie Charlotte Countess von Wylich and Lottum (1793–1869) in Berlin on April 29, 1811 . She was a daughter of Count Karl Friedrich Johann Gustav von Wylich and Lottum (1762-1828) and Ernestine Magdalene Sophie von Clermont (1772-1843). The couple had several children:
