Friedrich Balzer von Strantz (born August 30, 1829 in Düsseldorf , † October 13, 1897 in Stettin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He was the son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Karl von Strantz (1783-1865) and his wife Sophie Charlotte, née Countess von Wylich and Lottum (1793-1869). His older brother Karl Theodor (1820-1895) also rose to lieutenant general.

Military career

Strantz attended secondary school in his hometown and joined the 1st Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army as a cuirassier on March 1, 1846 . By March 1847 he was promoted to secondary lieutenant and from mid-October 1851 was commanded for three years for further training at the General War School in Berlin . Appointed regimental adjutant on January 19, 1855, Strantz was assigned to the topographical department of the Great General Staff from June 28, 1856 and rose to prime lieutenant in March 1858 . At the same time he was promoted to Rittmeister on May 31, 1859 he was transferred to the Guard Cuirassier Regiment . During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Strantz was commanded from June to August 1859 as a squadron leader for the 2nd Guards Landwehr Cavalry Regiment. As squadron chief he took part in the battles at Skalitz , Schweinschädel and Königgrätz during the war against Austria in 1866 and was promoted to major in mid-October 1867 . On March 16, 1869 he was transferred as a regular staff officer to the 2nd Hanoverian Uhlan Regiment No. 14 and in the spring of 1870 he was assigned to the Military Riding Institute.

With his regiment Strantz took part in the battles at Colombey , Noisseville , Amiens , Bapaume and Saint-Quentin as well as the siege of Metz in 1870/71 during the war against France . Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, he stayed with the occupation army in France after the peace agreement with the regiment. Insinuation à la suite commissioned to him on January 1, 1872, first with the leadership of the Hessian second Grand Ducal Dragoon Regiment (Leib-Dragoon Regiment) no. 24 in Darmstadt and appointed Strantz on 3 September 1872 the regiment commander. Strantz had married Vally von Wedel (1841-1909) on May 12, 1860 in Kremzow . The marriage had four children:
