Karsten Schäfer (born October 23, 1976 ) is a former German handball player and current trainer and sports scientist . His height is 1.83 m.

Schäfer began playing handball in Erfurt at the age of six . At the age of 19 he moved to HSV Suhl in the 2nd Bundesliga . After half a year with Suhl, he moved to SSV Erfurt Nord . He later played for SG Werratal 92 and rose to the 2nd Bundesliga with them in 2004. In the 2004/05 season , the club took 14th place in the 2nd Bundesliga, but had to relegate due to license withdrawal and disbanded in autumn 2005. Schäfer moved to the regional league team VfL Waiblingen in 2005 . After three years in Waiblingen, he moved to VfL Pfullingen . In 2011 he ended his playing career there. Schäfer held the position of a cyclist .

Schäfer, who has had the B license as a handball trainer since 1996 , has been under contract as an assistant trainer at TV Bittenfeld since 2012 . Schäfer has been training for the A license as a handball coach since 2014 . In the 2014/15 season , Schäfer rose to the handball league with the TVB , where the club now competes under the name TVB 1898 Stuttgart .

Schäfer has worked as a fitness trainer in figure skating since 2005 . In 2006 he began studying sports science at the University of Stuttgart , which he completed in 2012. Since 2009 he has been teaching as a snow sports instructor at the Institute for Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Stuttgart. Since 2011 he has been working as a research assistant in the Department of Biomechanics and Sports Biology at the Institute for Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Stuttgart. Since 2012 he has had a teaching position as a snow sports instructor at the Institute for Sports Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt . Schäfer is a trained ski instructor from the German Ski Instructor Association . From autumn 2018, Schäfer will work exclusively for the TVB and no longer for the University of Stuttgart.

Schäfer studied civil engineering at the Bauhaus University Weimar , which he completed in 2007. He lives in Holzgerlingen .
