Kaspars Gorkšs (born November 6, 1981 in Riga ) is a former Latvian football player.

Career

In the club

Kaspars Gorkšs was born in Riga in 1981 and started his career at the local club FK Auda . By 2002 he made 77 league games and nine goals there before moving to Sweden to Östers IF in December . After 32 games and one goal, he moved to league rivals Assyriska Föreningen in January 2005 . But after only one season he returned to his home country, to third in the championship from last year FK Ventspils . With five goals in the season he managed the team to win the Virslīga 2006. In the 2006/07 season he played in the UEFA Cup against the English club Newcastle United and lost 1-0.

On January 1, 2007, the change from Gorkšs to Blackpool FC became known. After ten missions until the end of the season, he was elected to the "Team of the Week" of the Football League Championship in August 2007/08 . Eight days later, he helped his team in the League Cup to reach the next round against Derby County . After County took the lead in the first half with a goal from Mo Camara , Gorkšs equalized shortly before the end and saved his team in overtime. There, too, Derby County took the lead again, until Gorkšs again equalized in the 120th minute. In the end, Blackpool won 7-6 on penalties. In the first week of October he was back on the “Team of the Week”. He scored his first league game goal on November 10 in a 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United . In December he was shortlisted for the "Latvian Footballer of the Year" award, but this went to the record national player Vitālijs Astafjevs from Skonto Riga . On February 25, 2008 and March 10, he was once again elected to the “Team of the Week”. At the beginning of May he was voted “Player of the Year” by the fans and the following day he took up the option of a one-year contract extension. After a good season and many appearances, rumors spread about a move to the Glasgow Rangers or to other English clubs such as Burnley FC , Crystal Palace , Preston North End or Watford FC . On May 28, he was reportedly close to a swap deal with Wes Hoolahan to Norwich City .

On June 12, the Queens Park Rangers announced that they had submitted a contract offer to Kaspars Gorkšs. On June 17, Blackpool FC issued a statement that they reported the Queens Park Rangers to the FA and the Football League because they suspected illegal action in the offer. Blackpool's trainer Simon Grayson said in an interview that the club was protecting its interests and that the QPR's action was not legal. On July 4th, it was falsely reported that Gorkšs had signed a contract with the Rangers. QPR wrote on their official website that Blackpool FC gave them permission to talk to a contract. But its President Karl Oyston denied this in an interview and was disappointed with how the Queens Park Rangers want to do their business. The Rangers later removed the article from their website.

On July 28, he finally moved to the Queens Park Rangers after long talks for a transfer fee of £ 250,000. Furthermore, Daniel Nardiello switched to Blackpool and Zeshan Rehman was awarded for a year. He made his debut on August 9 in a 2-1 home win over Barnsley FC . He scored his first goal of the season in the 2009/10 season on November 7, 2009 in a 2-1 away win at Sheffield Wednesday . In September 2010 he extended his contract for two years. With the Rangers he made promotion to the Premier League in the 2010/11 season , but after 114 league games and six goals, he left the club.

On August 24, 2011, he signed a three-year contract with Reading FC . He made his debut in the Reading shirt three days later in the 1-0 away defeat at Hull City . He made 42 league appearances for Reading and won the 2011/12 Football League Championship with his team .

In February 2013 Gorkšs was loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers until July 2013 . After 15 league games he returned to Reading and spent another season there (25 games / 3 goals) before moving to Colchester United for the 2014/15 season. After he was only used in seven games until the winter break, Gorkšs moved to the Greek first division club Ergotelis in January 2015 .

National team

Gorkšs was already active for the Latvian U-21 national team. He made his debut for the senior national team on December 24, 2005 against Thailand at the 36th edition of the King's Cup . On October 11, 2006 he made his debut in qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2008 when he came in the game against Northern Ireland in the second half for Māris Smirnovs on the field. In February he took part in a football tournament in Cyprus with the national team. In the semi-finals he played the full distance in the 2-0 defeat against Bulgaria . The following day the game for third place against Hungary was lost 2-0. On October 17, 2007, he scored his first international goal against Denmark . Gorkšs is currently the captain of the Latvian national team.
