The East German handball championship of the women was with the season 1983/84 held for the 34th time. The SC Leipzig secured on the final day with a win at defending champions ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / O. the tenth GDR championship title after 1978 against the tied SC Magdeburg and thus prevented a title hat-trick for the Frankfurt women. According to the regulations, in the event of a tie, the games decide against each other first, since both clubs had won their home matches by five goals difference, the games against the next-placed, ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / O., Had to be used. As in the previous year, there were no relegations.
The top scorer was Kerstin Schaumburg from SC Empor Rostock with 124 goals (72 of them seven meters ) .
