Bones found in the Apostolic Nunciature Rome

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The bone find in the Apostolic Nunciature Rome in October and November 2018 is a so far unsolved criminal case in Italy and the Vatican City . The skeleton found was analyzed as that of a man who died before 1964. The identity is unclear.

procedure

On October 30, 2018 , a human skeleton and individual bones were discovered during restoration work in the guard house of Villa Giorgina on the property of the Apostolic Nunciature in Rome . Since the following day, it has been determined whether the bones were the remains of the adolescents Mirella Gregori or Emanuela Orlandi , who had been missing since 1983 . Gregori had disappeared about 40 days before Orlandi.

The remains were subjected to a genetic analysis by the Roman criminal police, and the police interpreted the findings as the remains of two young women. The Vatican's expert, Giovanni Arcudi , stated, however, that it was probably the remains of a 25- to 35-year-old woman. On November 6, 2018, further bone fragments were discovered on the grounds of the nunciature, including parts of a skull and a lower jaw ; these were exhumed .

Preliminary investigation

The Rome Public Prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation into suspected murder . According to the first results of the investigation, the bones could not be assigned to either Orlandi or Gregori, they came from before 1964 and belonged to a man. The investigative cases of Orlandi and Gregori thus remained open until further notice, the investigation of the bones found is ongoing. No remains of clothing or belongings were found in their vicinity. The Vatican correspondent Andrea Tornielli put in the room that the remains are at least 100 years old.

The remains were examined at two institutes, one in Caserta near Naples . They should be precisely dated there using the radiocarbon method.
