The Counts of Kolowrat (formerly also Kol (l) owrat (h) , Czech Páni z Kolovrat , or Kolovratové ) are a Bohemian-Austrian noble family , after the Bohemian village Kolovraty ( Pl. Von kolovrat - German spinning wheel), today a part from Prague .

history

The family of the Counts of Kolowrat came from the Janovici clan, who u. a. also include Messrs. Czeyka von Olbramowicz and Janovsky von Janowicz. It appears for the first time in a document with Albrecht I, who in 1347 is referred to as "dominus Albertus de Colowrat" and "baro". His descendants divided into numerous branches. The Kolowrat-Krakowsky line still exists today.

According to the oldest Bohemian lordship order from 1501, the lords of Kolowrat take 12th place. Imperial count status with coat of arms improvement 1624 for Zdenko Liebsteinsky von Kolowrat. Royal Bohemian award of the title “High and Well Born”, Vienna April 27, 1626 for Heinrich von Kolowrat (-Liebsteinsky) on Zichowicz and Strzela. Reichsgraf, Frankfurt am Main July 20, 1658 for Franz Karl Liebsteinsky Freiherr von Kolowrat and his brothers. Bohemian confirmation of the count's status, Vienna November 8, 1660 for the brothers Franz Karl, Ferdinand Ludwig and Leopold Ulrich Liebsteinsky von Kolowrat.

Members of the Kolowrat lost large parts of their fortune after the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. They were related through marriages and the like. a. with the Vitzthum , Berka von Dubá , Lobkowitz , Guttenstein- Vrtba and Sternberg .

The family coat of arms , which has been documented since the early 13th century, shows in blue an eagle split by silver and red, whose chest and wings are covered with a golden moon, whose horns end in shamrocks. From the 15th century, the eagle wore a three-leaved golden crown. On the helmet with red-silver covers a closed flight , silver on the back and red on the front, covered with a golden clover stem .

The coat of arms (1624) shows, in a shield split by blue and silver, a gold-crowned and reinforced eagle, silver in front and red in the back, with a golden clover angel crescent on the chest, covered with the gold-crowned Austrian shield. On the crowned helmet with red-white-blue blankets an eagle flight divided by silver over red.

Overview of the master sequence

The secured lineage begins with Albrecht (Albertus) I. von Kolowrat (now Kolovraty in the Rican district near Prague) on Roczow, Kornhaus and Zehrowicz (* around 1320; † 1391). He held important positions at the court of Emperor Charles IV , was Marshal of the Queen of Bohemia, then royal Bohemian governor of the Vogtland, resided at Mylau Castle and was married to Anna von Seeberg. Albrecht I built the Augustinian monastery Ročov in 1375 , had a fortified residence with a farm there , founded the town of Upper Ročov in 1352 and granted it market rights. The city has the coat of arms of the Kolowrat family with the eagle and the clover angel. The couple had two sons:

  1. Jessek (Jesiko), whose daughter Kunigunde von Kolowrat 1386-1401 was princess abbess of the St. George's monastery on the Hradschin in Prague.
  2. Albrecht II (around 1335 - 6 July 1413) in Krassow, Kornhaus and Zebrowicz, lord of Liebenstein Castle (Libstein in the Kralowitz district), Burgrave of Elbogen in western Bohemia. His two sons are: 1). Hanuss (Hans), († 1438), pawnmaster of the castles Betlern and Tocznik, royal captain of the Prague cities, married to Eva Towaczowsky von Cimburg and 2). Herbort, on Roczow and Maschau (Masstiow) (* around 1370, † 1427), district chief of the Leitmeritz district. then royal Bohemian captain of the Egerland , married to Katharina von Schönburg. His descendants establish branches with numerous descendants who use their properties as nicknames.
  • The Kolowrat on Bezdružice (Weseritz in the Pilsen region) with the progenitor Johann von Kolowrat († 1469) held Bezdružice until the end of the 14th century . During the Hussite Wars they stood as members of the Pilsen Landfried on the side of the Catholics . In the first half of the 15th century, the Kolowrat separated from Nový Hrad. The great-grandson John, who was adviser to the king in 1523 , also held Buštěhrad, Krašov and Kozojedy. He fell in the battle of Mohács in 1526 and his great-grandson Wilhelm Heinrich von Kolowrat was treasurer and captain of the Chrudim district († 1642).
  • The founder of the Kolowrat on Nový Hrad (used the predicate Novohradský z Kolovrat ), Albrecht, built Nový Hrad (New Castle) near Louny (Laun) in the second half of the 15th century . His successors held high offices and functions at court. The branch died out in 1802.
  • The Kolowrat Řehrovice settled by the end of the 14th century in Řehrovice . From 1465 to 1467 Johann was envoy of Georg von Podiebrad in Western Europe. He was particularly popular because of his hard work. This branch died out around 1510.
  • The founder of the Kolowrat on Maschau , ( Mašťov ), Beneš on Ročov and Netluký, received Mašťov in 1454. His successors were dukes in the Saaz region ( Žatec ) and died out in 1623.

  • The Kolowrat on Liebstein (Libštejn) were named at the end of the 14th century after the Libštejn castle in the Pilsen region. Hanuš was a Catholic lord on Krašov, Zbiroha, Žebrák, Točník, Plasích and one of the opponents of George of Podebrady. Albrecht was the highest chancellor from 1503 to 1510. While the property was confiscated from the other families who professed Protestantism after the Battle of White Mountain , Zdeněk Lev was made Duke in 1624 for his services . Heinrich, who held the office of the highest court master from 1643 to 1646, was a loyal supporter of the emperor. Albrecht, royal representative, bought the Rychnov nad Kněžnou estate in 1640 , where his heirs, who had the emperor's benevolence, built a mighty castle. They lived here until 1861, when this branch died out with Burgrave Franz Anton.
  • The Kolowrat on Krakov were named after the Krakovec Castle near Rakovník , which they acquired in 1445. Power and wealth grew especially after the battle of the White Mountain. In 1671 they were made dukes. In 1725, Vilém Albrecht, supreme chancellor, inherited the Březnice castle and other lands from Messrs Jeníš von Újezd , which went to the Pálffy in 1872 . After the Kolowrat line of Libštejner died out, they received their lands Rychnov nad Kněžnou, which came under German administration during World War II and were expropriated in 1948; In 1992, Count Kryštof Jaroslav Kolowrat Krakowský returned the property Rychnov nad Kněžnou with the castle, its collections and 5,875 hectares of land. Count Jindřich Kolowrat-Krakowský (1897-1996) received the forest districts Diana (near Přimda ) and Týnec na Klatovsku with 7,698 hectares as well as one of the Kolowrat palaces in Prague, the palace on Ovocný trh (fruit market), which was formed from two Gothic houses has been owned by the family since 1670 and 1697, as well as three large commercial buildings.
