Korla ( Chinese  库尔勒 市 , Pinyin Kù'ěrlè Shì ; Uighur كورلا شەھىرى Korla Xəⱨiri Mongolian ᠬᠣᠷᠣᠯᠬᠣᠲᠠ ) is an independent city in the center of the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in the People's Republic of China . It has approx. 410,000 inhabitants (2004) and is the capital of the Mongolian Autonomous District Bayingolin .

geography

Korla is located at an altitude of 930 m on the southern edge of the Tian Shan Mountains, north of the Taklamakan desert. 7 km north of the city, on the way to Karashar, lies the Tiemen Pass , which played an important role in protecting the Silk Road from predatory nomads from the north. 57 km northeast of Korla is the important lake Bosten Hu , which supplies the city with fresh water via the Konqi River. Korla is the starting point of the South Xinjiang railway line to Kashgar.

history

As an important oasis on the northern Silk Road, Korla was already known under the name of Weili as a place with almost 10,000 inhabitants during the Han dynasty .

environmental issues

Korla is struggling with massive air pollution. In March 2016, according to the Chinese website aqicn.org, the air in the village, together with the western Chinese cities of Aksu and Kashgar, had the worst possible value. During the ongoing measurement, the limit values ​​for ozone , fine dust (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ), nitrogen dioxide , sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide are regularly exceeded.
