KoЯn is the debut album by the American metal band of the same name . It was released on October 11, 1994 under the Immortal Records / Epic Records label. In the USA , the movement produced by Ross Robinson was awarded double platinum for two million copies sold. It is considered to be a pioneer for the Nu-Metal scene that emerged from the mid-1990s .

Emergence

The band had a budget of 250,000 US dollars for the recording. According to Davis, the recording took about 6 weeks.

Music style and content

Typical of the album are, for example, the scat vocal technique or the bagpipes in the song Shoots and Ladders . Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic describes the style as "testosterone-laden, ultra-aggressive hybrids of metal and rap ." Cheryl Lynette Keyes notes that Korns influenced the style of rapper Esham . In terms of content, the album revolves around various interpersonal problems with a focus on youth-specific issues. In Faget, for example, Davis sings about the years of bullying he was exposed to, Need To deals with the fear of letting a loved one get too close and making himself so vulnerable, and in Daddy there is the sexual abuse of Davis by a family friend in the centre. According to Davis himself, Daddy does not affect his father as he was never raped by him.

“When I was a kid, I was being abused by somebody else and I went to my parents and told them about it, and they thought I was lying and joking around. They never did shit about it. They didn't believe it was happening to their son… I don't really like to talk about that song. This is as much as I've ever talked about it ... ”

“When I was a kid, I was molested by someone else and then I went to my parents and told them about it and then they thought I was lying and joking. So you have never done the slightest thing. You didn't think something like this would happen to your son ... I don't really like talking about the song. I've never said so much about it. "

- Jonathan Davis

However, according to the Allmusic Guide, this picking up on “alienation and abuse” also has a “cleansing effect”, which is why the album is also forgiven for some blunders in the review.
