geography

The city is located on the south coast of Sakhalin Island , about 40 km south of the Oblast capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , on the east coast of the Aniva Bay north of the La Pérouse Strait .

The city of Korsakow is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

Korsakov is the oldest Russian settlement on the Sakhalin Island. In 1853, a military post under the name Muravyov-Posten ( пост Муравьёвский / post Murawjowski, after Nikolai Murawjow-Amursky ) was set up here during Admiral Nevelskoi's expedition . As early as 1854 the post was vacated during the Crimean War . In 1869 it was re-established, now under the name of Korsakov-Posten ( пост Корсаковский / post Korsakowski, after the Russian statesman and governor-general of Siberia Michail Korsakow (1826-1871)). Towards the end of the 19th century, the post was the administrative center of the Sakhalin Oblast district of the same name.

From 1905 to 1945 the place belonged to Japan as Ōdomari ( Japanese 大 泊 町 , - chō ) after the Treaty of Portsmouth , which ended the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905 . As a result of the Second World War ceded to the Soviet Union, the place received city rights in 1946 under its current name.
