The Kupfer is a left tributary predominantly in the Hohenlohe district in northeastern Baden-Württemberg, almost 26 km long, which flows into the lower Kocher from the left and southeast in Forchtenberg .

Surname

Since copper-containing deposits occur in the valley area of the river, this has already been assumed as a motive for its naming. In the 19th century, vitriolic ore was mined south of Bauersbach . However, it is questionable that the name of the copper goes back to such occurrences.

geography

Course and description

The copper arises on the southeast edge of Zusatzshausen next to the Seeholzweg on the edge of a small wood and runs the first one and a half kilometers southwest, then turns to the right and flows the remaining first third of its course in front of the step edge of the Waldenburg mountains in a northerly direction to Kupferzell . Up to that point, the valley is a fairly flat and wide hollow in the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt formation ) of the Hohenlohe plain with a straightened river bed, on the flat side hills often lined with wide arable land. In Kupferzell, the creek bed reaches the shell limestone and the creek continues to flow in a north-westerly direction, deepens steeply and runs through a narrow, natural meander valley . More and more forest covers the side slopes, from Neufels often even the valley floor. In Forchtenberg , now running in the Lower Muschelkalk and about 140 m below the edge heights, it flows into the Kocher from the left .

Catchment area

The catchment area covers 72.6 km², most of which are located on the Hohenlohe plain . Apart from its first three kilometers in the Schwäbisch Hall district , the copper runs entirely in the Hohenlohe district .

nature

In the course of land consolidation proceedings in Westernach and the construction of the A 6 motorway , the copper from the source to Kupferzell was straightened. The surrounding agricultural areas were drained and made usable up to the top of the water.

With an ordinance of February 5, 1960, the Stuttgart Regional Council designated the Copper Valley with side valleys between the hamlet of Neufels in the city of Neuenstein and Forchtenberg as a landscape protection area (protection area number 1.26.003). The reserve has an area of 384.0 hectares.

  7. See the third source. As identified there, it was mining in ' sulphurous gravel' layers of plant slate directly above a bed of Lettenkeuper main sandstone.
  8. The third source also brings (p. 389) a quote from a contemporary test report about this Westernacher mine: “ 25. Ctr. Pounded with the help of machines, gave 500 pounds of fairly pure pebbles through so-called setting work. These coals therefore contain 20% gravel. “Note that we are only talking about pyrites , a mineral made of iron sulphide, but not any sulphidic ores containing copper . As a result, the vitriol ore itself did not contain any vitriol, namely sulphate - otherwise this would certainly have been mentioned - but sulphide . Vitriol was probably only created during further processing. The ore was brought to the Siedehütte near Ottendorf , today a district of Gaildorf .
