La Plata is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Huila in Colombia .

La Plata is located in Huila , in the Suboccidente sub- region , 122 km from Neiva at an altitude of 1118 m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 23 ° C. The area of the municipality is characterized by the elevations Sierra Nevada de los Coconucos and the Serranías de las Minas and Yarumal , which belong to the central cordillera of the Andes , and plains in between. The municipality borders in the north and west on Inzá and Páez in the Departamento del Cauca , in the south on La Argentina and in the east on Paicol and Pital .

history

The area of La Plata was inhabited by the indigenous people of the Paez long before the arrival of the Spaniards . Today's La Plata was founded in 1651 by Diego de Ospina y Maldonado, with the establishment of the parish of San Sebastián de La Plata at the beginning . The founding was related to Sebastián de Belalcázar's search for Eldorado and the interest in the silver mines to be found in the region .

The main industries in La Plata are agriculture , cattle production and pond farming . In particular, rice , coffee , bananas , cocoa , corn , sugar cane , beans , potatoes and fruit are grown.
