Legend is an English-French thriller by Brian Helgeland , which premiered on September 9, 2015 , was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival from September 12, 2015 and was released in German cinemas on January 7, 2016. The film is based on the book The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins by John Pearson.
action
The film tells the story of the identical twin gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray , who were involved in organized crime in the East End of London in the 1950s and 1960s, making them some of the most notorious criminals in British criminal history. Their unscrupulousness enables them to ascend quickly in the underworld. While Reggie has a knack for money, his recently released brother Ronnie endangers the building of the empire and is dominated by outbursts of anger. When Reggie falls in love with Frances Shea, his brother completely loses control. Not only are the brothers increasingly in the public spotlight, but soon they are also the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation . Reggie marries Frances and wants to rebuild the Kray empire along the lines of the Mafia in Las Vegas, while Ronnie wants to go back to the good old days when all problems were simply solved with violence.
background
The film is based on the book The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins by John Pearson, a biography of the Kray twins . Their lives were marked by violence from an early age, and they were rivals in the boxing ring as early as the 1930s and 1940s . Helgeland first became aware of the story of the Kray twins in 1998.
reception
Age rating
In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “For the most part calmly staged, the film contains some scenes of violence which, due to their drastic nature, can overwhelm children under the age of 16. However, they are always embedded in the context of the character development of the two protagonists and are never presented in a glorifying or stimulating way, so that people aged 16 and over can process these scenes. In addition, the historical setting and longer, quiet passages make it easier to distance yourself emotionally from the action.
Reviews
After its premiere and screening at the Toronto International Film Festival , the film won over 61 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics (based on 61 reviews, as of November 15, 2015) and achieved a score of 55 on Metacritic (based on 31 reviews, as of November 15, 2015) November 2015). A critic from filmfutter.com says: “Legend skillfully mixes the style of the American gangster film with its British flair. Tom Hardy, who stands out twice, turns an initially banal story into a very exciting and entertaining thriller. ”Lena Bopp from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung comments that Hardy is the best thing that could have happened to the film because Legend draws his strength from the fight, the acting is one of Tom Hardy against Tom Hardy and he can be anything in the film: “Heartbreaker and sadist, mother's son and big city cowboy, dandy and fool. He is awkward as Ronald and lithe as Reginald, and with both of them he submits to the film like a great gangster rules a city. ”Even if Andreas Borcholte of Spiegel Online calls the film essentially“ botch ”, he also shows himself to be from Hardy's talent impressed, who embodied the two sixties gangsters in a double role in such a way that this already makes the film “worth seeing”: “If it can even be seen twice, the screen inevitably belongs to him. He contrasts the acting finger exercise of the gallant handsome Reggie with the psychopath Ronnie, who scratches hard at the caricature, but murmurs deliciously through his pursed frog mouth. You can hardly get enough of these unequal brothers. "
Franz Everschor from film-dienst found that the film lacks “original events” and instead feeds the viewer “with a series of uniform gangster scenes”, “as we know from dozens of similar films”. Nonetheless, Everschor also highlighted the portrayal of Tom Hardy, who embodies the twin brothers “with great pleasure and a lot of energy”: “Especially the brutality of the schizophrenic Ronnie, which is always on the verge of explosion, makes the worst fear at every moment and makes the story more exciting than it is based on its plot. "Christian Schröder from Tagesspiegel criticizes that the film fails because of the lack of depth:" Brian Helgeland is not interested in scratching the surface of organized crime with 'Legend', showing what violence looks like and itself feels. He celebrates the fame of his protagonists. "
Gross profit
On its opening weekend, the film grossed over $ 8 million in the UK, making it number 1 on the UK cinema charts. The worldwide revenue of the film is around 43 million US dollars (as of June 26, 2016). In Germany, the film has so far had 159,803 admissions (as of July 7, 2019).
