Course of competition

The favorite of this competition was clearly the Portuguese world champion and European record holder Inês Henriques, who won the competition at the world championships last year. In the European annual best list before these European Championships, the Spaniard Júlia Takács led with 4:13:04 h, ahead of the Slovak Mária Czaková with 4:14:25 h, the Spaniard Ainhoa Pinedo with 4:18:56 h and the Ukrainian Wassylyna Witowschtschyk with 4 : 24: 08 h. These athletes were among the medal candidates. As the competition had rarely been held so far, this was an open matter.

The favorite Henriques pushed the pace right from the start. On the first thirty kilometers she walked 10 km sections between 48:19 min and 48:38 min. So she was on a world record course. From the beginning she went ahead alone. Her first pursuer was the Belarusian Nastassja Jazewitsch, who soon fell back and gave up at 35 km. After twenty kilometers, Henriques was already more than four and a half minutes ahead of the two Ukrainians Alina Zwilij and Witowschtschyk. Chrystyna Judkina, another Ukrainian, followed, more than six minutes behind. Czaková was seven seconds behind Judkina. The closest pursuers were Takács - 6:58 minutes behind the leader, the Belarusian Nadseja Daraschuk 7:06 minutes - and Pinedo - 9:15 minutes. After another ten kilometers, the distances had increased further. Second was Zwilij, who was 4:55 min behind, followed by Witowschtschyk - 6:50 min, Takács / Judkina - 9:00 min, Czaková - 9:39 min - and Pinedo - 14:18 min.

Henriques was unable to maintain her high starting pace for the last twenty kilometers. At first it only got a little slower, but the last 10,000 meters became difficult again for the front runner. Nevertheless, their lead was only slightly smaller. The Portuguese's competitors also slacked off somewhat. So Inês Henriques finally became the undisputed European champion. With 4:09:21 h, she set her first EM record. 3:23 minutes after her, Alina Zwilij came in second. Her time of 4:12:44 h meant a new Ukrainian national record. Third was Júlia Takács from Spain, who finished 2:38 minutes after the silver medalist. The further gaps were also large. Chrystyna Judkina was fourth, 11:25 minutes behind the winner. Wassylyna Witowschtschyk finished in fifth place just under two and a half minutes behind, Mária Czaková was sixth again 1:44 minutes behind.

The large gaps between this competition are certainly due to the fact that it is a newly introduced young discipline. But at least nineteen participants were already at the start - twelve more than at last year's World Championships.
