Neuhaus ( Slovene : Suha ) is a bilingual municipality with 1019 inhabitants in the Völkermarkt district in Carinthia (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

The community of Neuhaus is located on the far east of the Jaun valley south ( right ) of the Drau . The capital Neuhaus is about 4 km as the crow flies from the Austrian - Slovenian border.

Community structure

Neuhaus is divided into the seven cadastral communities Neuhaus, Graditschach, Berg ob Leifling, Leifling, Pudlach, Heiligenstadt and Schwabegg. The municipality includes the following 16 localities (population as of January 1, 2020):

history

Neuhaus ( Newenhavse ) was first mentioned in records in 1288, the district Leifling already in 1154 as Liwuelich and the district Schwabegg as Castrum Swabec 1212. end of the 13th century built the Earl of Heunburg the Schloss Neuhaus .

In 1958, today's community of Neuhaus was established by amalgamating the previously independent communities of Leifling and Schwabegg.

According to the 2001 census, the community of Neuhaus has 1,236 inhabitants, 96.9% of whom are Austrian and 1.0% German citizens. 13.2% belong to the Slovene-speaking ethnic group .

96.5% of the community population profess to the Roman Catholic Church and 1.4% to the Protestant Church . 1.3% have no religious beliefs.

The official blazon reads: "In the divided shield above in blue a golden, black grooved, three-pinned tower with a black open round gate and two loopholes, surrounded by three golden stars and elevated, below in black a golden plow."

Declaration of coat of arms: In the coat of arms of Neuhaus, the golden tower alludes to the castle or today's Neuhaus castle, the three golden stars to the Heunburgers , who featured them in their coat of arms and who had a focus of power in the southeastern Jauntal. The golden plow refers to agriculture as historically and currently the most important economic branch of the municipality.

The municipality's coat of arms and flag were awarded on June 2, 1980. The flag is blue and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
