Leo van den Thillart (born March 31, 1968 in 's-Hertogenbosch ) is a former Dutch ice hockey player and current coach , who played for the Krefeld Penguins in the German Ice Hockey League from 1986 to 2008 . Since 2008 he has been the head coach of Eindhoven Kemphanen in the Eredivisie .
Career
Leo van den Thillart began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth division of the 's-Hertogenbosch Red Eagles , for whose first team he made his debut in the Dutch second division in the 1986/87 season. The defender then worked for the Smoke Eaters Geleen in the Eredivisie for seven years . With Geleen he won the national cup competition in the 1992/93 season. After he had started the 1994/95 season with the Smoke Eaters, the national player moved to Viry-Châtillon Essonne Hockey in the French Ligue Magnus . There he spent two years as well as afterwards with its league rivals HC Amiens Somme . With Amiens, the left-shooter was runner-up in both seasons.
In the summer of 1998 van den Thillart was signed by the Krefeld Penguins from the German Ice Hockey League . Although he made 48 appearances for the team from NRW, he was unable to assert himself in Germany due to a lack of points - only four goals and three assists in the entire 1998/99 season . Therefore, the Dutch decided to change to the Milano Vipers in the Italian Serie A . He spent two years there before returning to his homeland in 2001. There he played in the following three years for his ex-club Smoke Eaters Geleen and the Tilburg Trappers in the Eredivisie. As a player for the Trappers, he was named the best defender in the league in the 2002/03 season.
In the summer of 2004 van den Thillart signed in the Dutch capital with the Amstel Tijgers Amsterdam , with whom he ended his active career after the 2007/08 season at the age of 40. In four years, the former DEL legionnaire and the Amstel Tijgers won the Dutch championship for the first and only time in his career in 2005, and the national cup competition in 2005 and 2007. In the 2006/07 season he was also voted the best defender of the Eredivisie again.
After his career as a player, he became head coach of the newly founded Eindhoven Kemphanen in 2008 , for which he has been working in the Eredivisie ever since.
