Liane is a German DEFA film directed by Erwin Stranka from 1987.

action

The twenty-year-old skilled worker Liane works in an electrical engineering company. Underqualified tasks and the planned assignment as a jumper inhibit your work motivation and your chance of advancement. Despite a casting for a film, she is unable to make a career change.

Liane's private life also falls short of her standards. Liane's parents are divorced. Her younger brother Freddy has great difficulties starting his career and is increasingly drifting into social subcultures. For a short time, by moving out of her mother's apartment, she succeeded in increasing her private freedoms. Living together with her partner Jürgen suffers from the deviating moral concepts of her cheating partner. In addition, Liane's work colleague Kalle is suspected of fraudulent manipulation of his work results, as he disproportionately over-fulfills the required workload. Liane soon only found support and security with Jürgen's father, who lives on a farm outside Berlin.

Despite her own problems, Liane supports her brother Freddy and stands up for her colleague Kalle, even if she does not respond to his shy solicitation. Torn between the private and business constraints, Liane seeks an individual approach to life without being patronized by superiors, parents and partners. To what extent you will succeed in this ultimately remains open.

Production and publication

The script for Liane was based on the radio play Why I of all people? by Daniela Dahn . In the film, Liane asks this question about the internal distribution of tasks. The dramaturgy was in the hands of Dieter Wolf .

The first performance of the film, shot on ORWO color by the artistic working group “Babelsberg”, took place on September 22, 1987 in Halle-Neustadt on the occasion of the opening of the 15th days of socialist film.

criticism

The lexicon of international films describes Liane as a content-wise dense examination of the life wishes and demands of young people in the GDR, which is staged “to a degree critical and open” and with a feeling for atmosphere.

The contemporary reviews in the GDR press emphasized the contradictions of the youth and the complexity. The aspect of criticism of the system was only hinted at in line with the political situation. For example, the Berlin national newspaper wrote that the “friction surface” between the young people's aspirations and reality is designed to be tangible. The Thüringer Tageblatt noticed a “quiet humor” that even made the scenes in the electrical engineering company profound and entertaining.
