Lionel Suarez (born January 15, 1977 in Rodez ) is a French accordionist who works between world music and jazz .

Suarez comes from a family of musicians from Bertholène in the Aveyron department , where he grew up; he was first introduced to music by his grandfather, a drummer and accordionist, and his father, an accordionist. He received basic lessons in music theory, piano and accordion from François Aceti at the age of 8. At the age of fifteen he began playing musette in public and performed in the ballrooms of the area; In a school band he played rock music as a bass player . He then perfected his technique with the accordionist André Thépaz and studied at the Marseille Conservatory, where he graduated with a first prize and a gold medal.

Until the early 2000s, Suarez continued to play at dance events, but began to be interested in other styles of music: He accompanied the Occitan songwriter Claude Martí (with Gérard Pansanel ) and discovered jazz as an autodidact. In 2002 he moved to the Paris region, where he performed with artists such as Bernard Lavilliers and Mouss & Hakim. With the singer André Minvielle he forms the duo Minvielle + Suarez , which has appeared on jazz stages and festivals since 2006 and recorded the album Tandem in 2011 . With the tenor Roberto Alagna he recorded the album Sicilien with Sicilian songs, which he also presented in concert. In 2013 Suarez released his first album Cocanha! (in a trio with guitarist Kevin Seddiki and Pierre-François Dufour on cello and drums). In 2018, together with trumpeter Airelle Besson, cellist Vincent Ségal and percussionist Minino Garay , he remembered the tangos and milongas of Carlos Gardel on the album Quarteto Gardel , which received excellent reviews .

Suarez has also worked with Charles Aznavour , Georges Moustaki , Olivia Ruiz , Clotilde Courau , Allain Leprest, Yael Naim , Didier Lockwood , Sylvain Luc , Harry Connick , Richard Bona , Boulou & Elios Ferré , André Ceccarelli and the Orchester National de Jazz .
