Lissi und der wilde Kaiser is a German 3D animated film from 2007 that was directed by Michael Herbig . It is a parody of the Sissi trilogy created by Ernst Marischka in the 1950s .

The German theatrical release for the film distributed by Constantin Film was October 25, 2007.

action

The Austrian Empress Lissi lives happily with her husband Emperor Franz at Schöngrün Castle. The couple's harmonious and well-ordered world, which is characterized by financial abundance and decadence , is suddenly shaken when Lissi is kidnapped by the gruff Yeti . The yeti was commissioned by the devil and his echo to do this, otherwise he would have to go to hell because of his arrogance and malice.

Immediately, Emperor Franz, accompanied by his loyal field marshal and the dear Empress Mother, takes up the pursuit, which leads them across the national borders to Bavaria. The exterminators Schwaiger and Ignaz also take up the pursuit, as they hope the reward will lead to a better life.

During the kidnapping, Lissi breaks into a frozen lake, but is rescued by the Yeti. Little by little she befriends the Yeti. She succeeds in convincing the Yeti that he shouldn't go on living with his arrogant manner, and he gets better. After the Yeti has been shot, they decide to seek protection for the time being in the Neuzahnstein Castle of King Bussi of Bavaria, who suffers from an exaggerated mania for cleanliness and a toothache. Meanwhile, the field marshal finds a message in a bottle that Lissi has left behind. The actual content of this message is not recognized by Emperor Franz, as the decisive points have become illegible due to the water. This makes it look to Franz as if Lissi loves another man. Franz is so shocked by this letter that he desperately wants a "beep" - an unspecified coffee "specialty". The word itself is beeped every time in the film. He suspects that he can get this from King Bussi at the castle.

After Lissi and the Yeti have successfully fought against the exterminators, Franz arrives at the castle and accuses Lissi of treason. Thereupon the devil appears to usurp Lissi. Together with Franz, the Yeti manages to outsmart the devil. After they have freed Lissi, it comes to a happy ending. The Yeti can soothe the toothache of King Bussi, who then marries the Empress mother. Everything clears up between Lissi and Franz, and the yeti, who has gone to the Himalayas, finally finds a friend - Reinhold Messner .

Emergence

The parody of the Sissi trilogy was originally a series of gags that Herbig had created for his comedy series Bullyparade . There the skits ran under the name "Sissi - Menopause of an Empress". Unlike the sketches in the television series, however , the name Sissi was not allowed to be used and was changed to Lissi . The director described the film as "falling on its knees" before the original Sissi films of the 1950s, in which Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Böhm had portrayed the Austrian imperial couple.

Herbig decided to implement the project as an animated film. From an aesthetic point of view, according to the director, the realization of the former skits as an animated film was the right decision. About 50 animators worked on the film, and the production cost was twelve million euros.

People and places appear several times which can be seen as allusions to real people and places. Franz and Lissi live at Schöngrün Palace, which is an allusion to Schönbrunn Palace . King Bussi of Bavaria lives on Neuzahnstein based on Neuschwanstein Castle and King Ludwig II.

A wide variety of film quotes can also be found, including allusions to the Pirates of the Caribbean , King Kong and The Mummy . Some scenes are also borrowed from various fairy tales, including Rapunzel and The Three Little Pigs . One of the photos on the wall of Lissi's bedroom shows her and Franz with the abahachi tied to the torture stake from Manitu's Shoe , also a film by Herbig based on the bully parade.

music

Ralf Wengenmayr , who also wrote the music for Herbig's film Der Schuh des Manitu , composed the music for the film. The official song for the film comes from Max Mutzke and is called "Because it's you". The single was released on November 2nd, 2007. This track was produced by Stefan Raab , who also contributed other songs to the soundtrack.

Free TV premiere

The German premiere took place on September 7, 2009 on ProSieben . The film was shown in Austria on August 30, 2009 on ORF 1 .

Gross profit

The film reached a total of around 2.8 million admissions, of which 2,273,804 in Germany, 477,535 in Austria and 35,276 in Switzerland. Distribution in Germany was Constantin Film , in Austria its former subsidiary, Constantin Film-Holding , and in Switzerland Rialto Film . The film grossed around $ 30,000,000.

reception

The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that the film was “great cinema” in its best moments. The reviewer Fritz Göttler stated: "Bully's film is always beautifully ingenious when it lets itself go a little, is pleasantly degenerate." Furthermore, Göttler said that in terms of animation technology, the film does not achieve the quality of American computer animation films, which Susanne Schmetkamp does Time also noted. She also criticized the decision to conceptualize the film as an animation: “But the charm of the actors, as we know it from the Sissi sketches on the TV comedy show, cannot be animated digitally. […] In particular, the hilarious facial expressions of Herbig, Tramitz and Kavanian, which ultimately made the previous films so successful, are missing. A handful of puns and jokes, strung together without structure and only half original, is just not enough. ”The film was generally rated lower than all Herbig productions before, and at the box office the film also lagged far behind its predecessors.

The Lexicon of International Films judges: “Gag and imaginative animated film on a technically high level, which need not shy away from comparison with international standards. Lovingly designed characters and the careful synchronization of course do not allow one to overlook the fact that as a parody of the 'Sissi' films it lacks the bite, so that the film can stand out more as an amusing homage.
