Ensembles
Old town Bad Windsheim
The ensemble encompasses the city as it encompasses the former, younger, outer city fortifications including its moat area, in the southwest including the Winterung pond and the Aischlauf pond belonging to the former bastion at the Seetor. Like Rothenburg, Windsheim achieved imperial city status in the last quarter of the 13th century . The first great heyday of the city in the 14th century was so stormy that as early as the second half of the 14th century, the first ring of fortifications, which was founded in the 13th century and constantly improved, was no longer sufficient and a second of generous size was designed Expansion with double trenches, a rampart with gun chambers, pond fortifications, 20 towers and three archways took place in the first half of the 15th century. The inner and outer Bering continued to exist side by side for a long time and until the 19th century determined the softening of the imperial city. It was not until the 20th century that the city grew beyond this ring, after all the towers and gates of the city wall were demolished in 1867–82. As a result, the imperial city does not open up with the same significance as in Rothenburg , Dinkelsbühl or Nördlingen , but the clearly handed down late medieval city structure has a high testimony value. The inner old town, laid out on a hill with an older churchyard fortification , has been expanded in its floor modeling in a great way into a catacomb- like cellar system consisting of street-like corridors and hall-like rooms. At the highest point, dominating the city and landscape, are the city parish church , founded as a Romanesque basilica around 1200, and the monumental building of the town hall (in the appearance of the 18th century), structurally very closely connected, together with the official and educational buildings ( grammar school , town clerk's house , magistrate's house , Rectory ), close to the wedge-shaped triangular market caused by the three city gates, surrounded by the few, large blocks of houses surrounding narrow old town streets. On the market there are the narrow and very deep plots of land typical of the founding of cities in the 13th century for the patrician-commercial bourgeois, often three-story properties with numerous ancillary buildings staggered in depth. The closed block of the medieval ghetto (Judenhöflein) is just as recognizable as the market-like squares on the inside of the original archways: square on Pastoriusstraße, Weinmarkt, Schüsselmarkt at the former gate on Altstraße to Nuremberg (in the area of today's Hagelsteingasse). The only monastery that was able to stay here from the late 13th century until the Reformation , the Augustinian monastery , left behind the late Gothic choir, which was converted in the 17th century to store the valuable city library . The outer artisan town that emerged in the 14th century took in the imperial hospitals . It shows an arable bourgeois structure that differs from the older inner city : on flat ground, wide, straight streets with loose buildings and lots of garden land, one to two-story half-timbered buildings, alternating with barns. Significant, market-like wide street spaces with many staggered, handsome half-timbered gabled houses, partly rebuilt on the eaves side and plastered in the 18th century, with an overall urban impression, show the arteries at the new gates: Seegasse, Rothenburger Straße, Pastoriusstraße. Most of the large ornamental half-timbered houses from the second half of the 16th century are located here. The inhibition of development initiated in the 16th century with the strengthening of the Ansbach margraves together with the turmoil of the Reformation and the catastrophe of the Thirty Years' War led to stagnation, a decline in the regional agricultural market and, in 1803, loss of independence from the 17th century. This was due to the fact that the predominantly wooden building stock of the city, which was built between the 14th and 16th centuries. Belonged to the 19th century, still had to meet the residential and commercial needs of the common citizen and only a few outstanding families were able to build glamorous new buildings in the contemporary style. Plastered and rebuilt several times, important evidence of late medieval wooden pillar construction since the first half of the 14th century has recently been uncovered in Bad Windsheim, whereby these finds were essentially accidental finds during building projects; Comparably valuable substance has certainly been preserved in the core of numerous other buildings. File number: E-5-75-112-1.
Ickelheim town center
The closed village is located in the Windsheimer Bucht, a woodless valley plain in the Aischgrund, which is also known as the granary of Middle Franconia . A former royal court was mentioned in 889 for 741. For centuries - 1294 to 1805 - the local history was determined by the Teutonic Order , as a sub-office of Ickelheim of the Ballei Franken. The place experienced various destruction in wars and fires, but even after the fire of 1856 the historical village image is still largely preserved as it was determined by buildings up to the 18th century. The cluster village is a round village with a closed outline, which is determined by a path in the course of the former fortifications (palisades with ramparts and ditches) or through the mill streams. The historic village entrances preserved their half-timbered gatehouses from the early 18th century (lower gate marked "1713"). In the village floor plan, an older inner town center can be seen, which refers to the former royal court. Around this core, the generous village fortifications enclosed the enlarged late-medieval-early modern settlement. In this extension, the main or thoroughfare appears to be systematized, even if its north-south broad course suddenly bends at right angles to the east at the southern end at a right angle to the upper gate. All in all, it turns out that the systematization of the expansion and rebuilding up to the 19th century did not lead so far that the irregular pile structure would have disappeared. In Ickelheim the parish church became independent in 1347. The current building with a pointed helmet tower mainly dates from the 15th century. Formerly located on the edge of the older core, the church is also gaining urban significance in the angle between the main street and the junction to the office building. The village is dominated monumentally by the handsome former Teutonic Order House, a building from the 16th century with baroque changes, although the building is typically situated on the outskirts. References to the Teutonic Order can be found scattered throughout the village, in the form of coats of arms or Teutonic crosses. The main parts of the structure of the farms and houses date from the 18th to 19th centuries. The older half-timbered houses are on the ground floor, while the younger two-storey buildings only partially have half-timbered upper floors. Incidentally, the two-storey architecture, which emphasizes the typically urban character of the Frankendorf village, fits in well with plastered solid buildings from the later 19th century. A half-timbered inn with a half-hipped roof has been preserved on the village square, next to which there is also the former Teutonic brewhouse. File number: E-5-75-112-2.
City fortifications Bad Windsheim
Older city fortifications
The older city fortifications were probably built in the later 13th century (elevation to imperial city in 1280), strengthened in the 14th century, extensive construction measures 1379–81. There were formerly three gates, of which only two were retained during the expansion in the 15th century, the Johanniter Tor (road to Würzburg) and the Seetor (Nürnberger Straße). The gate on the road to Ipsheim was closed and the Rothenburg Gate was rebuilt. The entire city lying within the older wall ring is part of this city fortification, as the artificial modeling of the natural gypsum stone hill is closely connected with the construction of the city fortifications. This consisted in all of the masonry parts of gypsum stone that was broken underground in the city area. These catacomb-like tunnels were used for fortification and were expanded into a multi-layered system of partly carved stone, partly bricked, vaulted corridors and hall-like rooms, with their own well and bricked entrances to all the old buildings. File number: D-5-75-112-1.
Course of the ring:
- Area of the former Torburg on the road to Ipsheim: Hagelsteingasse 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, Metzgergasse 29
- Remnants of the wall from the south-east section on the western boundary of the property on the former moat: Metzgergasse 29, 27, 25, 23, Husarengasse 11, Metzgergasse 21, 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, Knörrgasse 8, 6, Kumpfgasse 7, 5, 3, 1
- Area of the former Torburg at the Älteres Seetor: Knörrgasse 1, 2, 3, Seegasse 1, 2, 4, 6
- Wall between Seetor and Älteres Johannitertor, built: Roßmühlgasse 2, Postgasse 4, Holzmarkt 13, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1, Schirmergasse 2, 4, Wassergasse 1, Kornmarkt 4, Schirmergasse 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, Nehrgasse 1, An der Alten Weed 11, 9, 7, 5, 3

Younger city fortifications
The more recent city fortifications included another outer ring, created around 1379/81, initially as a double trench with an intervening wall (with gun chambers), 1424-28 along the trench system, construction of a mighty circular wall made of red sandstone with 20 towers and three gates. In the 16th century, the gates were reinforced with mighty bastions . A pond system was added to it in the second third of the 15th century, which served to supply the ditches with water, the municipal water supply and defense. The only remaining pond is wintering. Except for very small remains, the younger city fortifications were demolished in the second half of the 19th century. But the moat with gardens and the wall gardens instead of the moat that were created in 1816/17 (despite some disruptive buildings) preserve the structure of the entire fortification and thus the layout of the old town. File number: D-5-75-112-2.
Course of the younger city fortifications:
- Well preserved between Spitalwall and Westring Wallgraben with gardens, with remains of walls
- between Hainserwall and Nordring Graben area, despite the heavier development
- Between Schwedenwall and Ostring or Hilpert-Ellrodt-Promenade Graben area with wall gardens is well preserved for long stretches
- Between the building yard wall and the southern ring, the moat area with wall gardens is well preserved for long stretches, including the pond in front of the south (wintering)

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
