Ensembles in Berchtesgaden
Ensemble Nonntal
File number: E-1-72-116-2
While the bourgeois market could only develop on the narrow plateau southwest of the monastery complex, there was a narrow strip of land for further civil development in the 17th century only to the northeast of the monastery, next to the former Schranne on today's town hall square and the bourgeois parish church of St. Andreas along the old Salzburger Straße.
On the slope side, at the foot of the Lockstein, a row of bourgeois buildings was built, under which a monastery building, the Chancellor's House, protrudes. With the exception of the dominant official building, these are two- to four-storey plastered craftsmen's houses, residences and inns, mostly dating from the 17th century, with flat gable roofs, also with crooked hip roofs, and some with stuccoed facades. The lively image of the ensemble is essentially determined by the different heights of the roofs; Individual old house gardens also contribute to this. The building on the street from the 19th century on the valley side had a partly disruptive effect on the historical image of the row of buildings on the slope.
Ensemble market place
File number: E-1-72-116-1
The ensemble includes the closed historical market, the bourgeois center of the market town and the former entire prince provost. It is a street that - only separated from it by the Neuhausbogen - directly adjoins the monastery and residence area in a south-westerly direction ( see Ensemble Schlossplatz ).
Only in the northern part of the market, in front of the passage to the monastery, could a small triangular actual square develop, which is separated from the monastery buildings by the old monastery tavern from the 16th century, the Neuhaus; the two dozen or so bourgeois properties, on the other hand, are crowded on the increasingly narrow shoulder of a spur of the priest stone towards the south-west, the largest area of which is occupied by the monastery in the east. The limited space forced houses up to four storeys high, which, with their gable-facing, protruding flat gable roofs, are of alpine peasant origins, but also maintain their bourgeois character in terms of size, construction and design, as they do in the residential buildings, above all through their roofs , consciously differentiate.
Almost all the buildings are of late medieval origin and have been inhabited for centuries by the families of long-established traders, above all the timber and toy manufacturers. At the beginning of the 19th century, the facades of some of these consistently plastered buildings were given a rich empire stucco , which has been renewed several times since then . With the renovation and painting of the Hirschenhaus, a corner building, by August Thiersch and the Gothic design of the market fountain, the late 19th century set special accents in the square. The more recent times have largely preserved the historical buildings, but large shop windows and passageways break-ins have a partially disfiguring effect, just as the new building No. 24 has unfortunately given up the former greater closeness of the square at its western end.
Ensemble Schlossplatz
File number: E-1-72-116-3
The palace square with its buildings is an impressive monument to the 700-year history of the prince-provost of Berchtesgaden. It is the historical, spiritual and lordly center of this small spiritual state, which emerged from the foundation of an Augustinian canon monastery around 1102 by Count Berengar von Sulzbach.
With this, Berengar fulfilled the legacy of his mother Irmgard, and Eberwein, the first provost, with difficulty settled the foundation, which was extremely remote in the high mountains, with monks from the Ammergau monastery Rottenbuch. The monastery complexes were built on the Priesterstein, a plateau that slopes steeply to the east; The Archbishop of Salzburg consecrated the first, probably wooden church in 1122, the predecessor of the existing, former collegiate, current parish church , which dominates the square and is largely of Romanesque origin and was built around 1200 with a double tower facade. At the same time, the Romanesque cloister was built on the south side, the architectural decorations of which illustrate certain ties between the monastery and the Hohenstaufen monarchy, through which it had received a number of sovereign rights - including that which later became so important to salt and ore mining - which ultimately became the basis for the imperial immediacy reached in 1294. The large early Gothic choir of the collegiate church (1283–1303) dates from this period of political ascent; In the monastery, which was being expanded at the same time, the main building was the dormitory, an elegant two-aisled vaulted hall.
The development of the Schlossplatz on the west side dates back to the time of the heavy disputes with the neighboring ore monastery of Salzburg in the 14th / 15th centuries. Century back to the salt mining. Prince Provost Bernhard von Leoprechting had the grain box and the cashier's house built here and a shield wall was drawn along the western rear side, giving the square a fence-like border. In the first half of the 16th century, the newly gained independence from Salzburg and the economic prosperity of the monastery (salt mining, wood goods production) under the prince provost Gregor Rainer and Wolfgang Griesstätter also manifested itself in increased construction activity. The Romanesque , partly overbuilt cloister quarter no longer met the princely demands ; 1532-48 he was presented to the west of the provost wing, which is in line with the western front of the church. The monastery buildings themselves were extended, the Romanesque nave of the church had been rebuilt in the late Gothic style around 1510. On the west side of the square, the grain box and the cashier's house were combined with intermediate structures; the newly gained long wing was given the impressive ground floor arbors above red marble pillars on the Schlossplatz side. The exits of the square in the north and south-west were closed by overbuilt archways, whereby in the south-west, in front of the exit to the bourgeois market, the courtyard-like area in front of the former Fronveste was given its shape by another arch; in the north, the head building of the stable master's office connected to the arch, then the cemetery, which was closed in 1811, formed the border against the civil Nonntal.
The baroque era brought structural enrichment and accents late, as the three successive prince provosts from the Wittelsbach family, who were also archbishops of Cologne, did not reside in Berchtesgaden; Nevertheless, the Bavarian influence in the prince-provost was dominant at that time. The south side of the square underwent significant changes with the expansion of the south wing as a second residential wing, after the late medieval chancellery building was first built over or adapted, then the space up to the propstei (west wing) was closed and then at the end of the 18th century, shortly before the abbey was abolished In 1803, seven axes were added to the new wing by the last provost of Schroffenberg . The rich stucco facade, which underlines the stately, residential character of the square, was created in 1725 on the Propsteibau, 1781/84 on the south wing. In the 17th / 18th In the 19th century, the medieval bastion at the southeast corner of the monastery district was transformed into a baroque garden, in which two small canons' houses now also found space.
The Wittelsbachers' fondness for the Berchtesgaden landscape and the romantic understanding of the landscape, here the high mountain romance, gave the two large abbey tracts another function as a royal summer residence until 1918, which included the maintenance of the buildings and gave them new importance through the important art collections of Crown Prince Rupprecht. The towers of the collegiate church, which were rebuilt by Heinrich Hübsch from 1856–64 and ruined by lightning strikes in 1596 and 1819 , also belong to the 19th century .

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
